  Rock, Paper, Scissors:

In this online gambling version of the popular children’s game, you play against the program and bet on the length of your winning streak.

Rules

Most of us know Rock, Paper, Scissors as a children’s game, or as an activity used to make decisions between two people. For example, two people arriving at a bathroom door at the same moment might use a round of Rock, Paper, Scissors to decide which one of them gets to use the facility first. This is why it can also be classified as a random selection game. The game involves making shapes with one’s hand: a rock (closed fist), paper (open hand), or a pair of scissors (two fingers held out). At the count of three (usually), the participants make a shape. If they happen to make the same shape, the game is tied. Otherwise, the “ranking” of shapes is as follows: a rock defeats a pair of scissors because it can “crush” the metal, a pair of scissors can cut and thereby defeat the paper, and the paper is superior to the rock because it can cover the rock. Such is a conventional Rock, Paper, Scissors game.

However, an online gambling game has been developed, introducing many new twists to this well-known game. You basically make two main decisions. One is to choose which symbol or weapon (rock, paper, or scissors) you plan to play. The second is how long you expect your winning streak to be, or how many times in a row you expect to win. The longer you predict your winning streak to be, the larger your potential payoff, but also the smaller your chances of winning.

Once you have set your wager, two virtual hands (one for you, and one for your opponent) will go through the motions of the game. The hands are usually of very different colors so you can easily distinguish which one is your virtual representation. Then each hand displays its chosen weapon, and you know the outcome of the round.

In short, the rules of this game are very simple. Anybody familiar with this game (which has made its way all over the world under different names) should not have much trouble learning the workings of the online gambling version of it.

Bets

As one has probably guessed from the outline in the “rules” section of this article, betting in this game is rather simple. Once you choose your weapon and guess about your winning streak, that is it. Fans of complex betting options, such as those found in Sic Bo or Roulette, may be better served elsewhere. Then again, having too many choices can be as oppressive and confusing as having no choice at all, so players who are inexperienced in choosing wagers might relish the relative simplicity of the online gambling version of Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Strategies

In some cases, you will be playing against another person online. Yes, a human being, not a computer program. This might be an advantage for you, given the vagaries and irrationalities of human choices, particularly when “random” choices are predictable, or at least somewhat guessable. We speak here of the widely-held belief that many people, when playing Rock, Paper, Scissors, tend to use a rock as their first choice. If so, take advantage of this by using paper as your first choice, particularly if you know the other person is a beginner. However, if you are playing against a computer or an experienced opponent, do not expect this tactic to work for you.

Then again, not many people approach any version of Rock, Paper, Scissors with a strategy in mind. For many players, it is almost entirely a game of chance, and this approach is likely to be carried over into the online gambling version of the game. It is true that there is a regularly scheduled competition or tournament for the game (the traditional, non-online version), which has become quite large and semi-institutionalized. One is likely to find strategy-oriented players there, but it is reasonable to assert that such players are in the minority.

A strategy that sometimes works is to keep playing the same weapon over and over, especially if you are not playing against another online player, and the computer program that functions as your opponent is designed for random choices of its own weapons. However, such a strategy is likely to pall quickly, and the resulting extremely dull game might not be worth the small amount of extra money you might win.

Experience

Rock, Paper, Scissors can be considered part of the trend of tweaking non-casino games so that they can be adapted for online gambling purposes. For instance, similar things have been done for coin tossing.

As with other games of this type, the experience of playing Rock, Paper, Scissors has a great deal of charm and novelty built into its concept. Traditionally, games of Rock, Paper, Scissors have not been associated with gambling. They are not considered seriously, and one usually does not lose money playing them. Adding a “real money” gambling twist to this game can be a lot of fun.

However, this very novelty can carry a downside. Some people may be so used to non-serious games of Rock, Paper, Scissors that they will have a great deal of difficulty adjusting their approach to the game. In other words, it is going to be hard for some players to wrap their heads around the fact that they are risking real money on a Rock, Paper, Scissors game. Even people who are experienced in online gambling, therefore, might not be sure how to tackle the financial decisions inherent to playing the game (how much to bet, how long to keep playing, etc.).

All in all, however, this game might be just the thing for casino fans who are starting to get a little jaded with the usual casino games. Rock, Paper, Scissors is very different in many fundamental aspects, and can be enjoyed in and of itself, or as a way to whet one’s appetite for more conventional gambling games that have become a little bit boring. With the addition of online gaming technology and well-designed user interfaces, good gambling sites offer a charming, exciting twist on a traditional game.
