  Blackjack:

In blackjack, the player plays against the dealer even though in casino blackjack, the dealer can interact with up to seven players in (mostly) parallel, simultaneous games. The player places a bet, and then draws two cards. He or she wins if he or she gets a higher total than the cards in the dealer’s hand. However, he or she should be careful not to go too high, because if his total exceeds twenty-one, he or she loses. (Hence the use of Twenty-one or Vingt et Un as the alternative names for blackjack.) Should the dealer’s total exceed twenty-one, he or she loses to the remaining players who have not yet been defeated. To hit means to ask for another card. To stand means to reject the offer of another card.

The player can decide whether or not to take additional cards in order to increase his or her total—hopefully, without going over the limit of twenty-one.

The dealer’s situation is different, since the decision of whether or not to take an additional card has already been made for him or her by the game’s rules. The dealer is obligated to take another card if his/her initial total is less than seventeen, and prohibited from doing so if his/her total is at least seventeen. The rules are a little more flexible for “soft” seventeens (seventeens which are reached by valuing an ace as eleven, such as an ace plus a six). In that case, the rule about whether or not to take another card (or in blackjack terms, to “hit”) at “soft” seventeen varies from casino to casino.

Bets

Betting in blackjack is fairly regulated in the sense that most casinos have specific minimum bets you need to place in order to begin. However, players still have considerable freedom once play gets underway. One option is to double down, which means that you double your original bet, and pick only one card. The player can also split a pair, which is not simply a betting option but a choice that changes that player’s entire situation. It means that, if the player’s first two cards are a pair, he or she can decide to play two different hands from then on. Of course, he or she must then put up a second bet for the additional hand. The second bet must be of an equal amount to the first bet. There is also the option known as “surrender,” which is not offered by all casinos. After the dealer has checked his hand for blackjack (a total of exactly twenty-one), the player can surrender, which means that he or she gets back half of the original bet, but does not continue to play the hand. The player can then go on to the next hand.

Strategies

One of the most famous blackjack “strategies” is card-counting, which is basically about estimating your odds based on the ratio of high cards to low cards in play. Card-counting, however, is considered cheating, and players can get into big trouble if they are caught doing it at casinos. Take it for granted that your dealer has been trained to spot card-counters.

However, what legitimate strategies are left to us, then? Let us examine them. There is the approach known as “basic strategy,” which involves looking at your own hand, plus the one card in the dealer’s hand that you will be able to see face-up. If your own hand’s total is five to eight, hit. If seventeen to twenty, stand no matter what card you see your dealer holding. If your hand is thirteen to sixteen, stand if the dealer’s card has a value in the range of two to six.

The tactics become a little different if your own hand contains an ace or is a “soft” total. If your other card is an eight or nine, stand. If the non-ace card you hold is from a two to a six, hold.

Now, what do you do if you have pairs? When should you play your hand as it is, and when is it a good idea to split your pair into two hands? If you have two aces or eights, split no matter what the dealer’s face-up card is. If you have two tens, stand no matter what. If you have a pair of sevens, twos or threes, split if the dealer’s face-up card is in the range of two to seven. If the dealer’s card is eight or above, hit.

The Experience

Blackjack is one of the most popular casino games around today. Some speculate that this is because of widespread interest in (if not necessarily actual practice of) card-counting. Popular culture has played no small role in adding to the glamour of card-counters. In fact, a rather sweet, enjoyable romantic comedy called Apassionada was filmed a few years ago about a card-counter and a sexy widow. Adding to the mystique is the ambiguous status of card-counting. It is not illegal, despite what some gambling establishments might lead you to believe. However, since casinos are private property, casinos do have the right to remove and ban you from the premises if you are caught card-counting, or even suspected of it.

One of the most important aspects of blackjack is the ambiguous relationship of the player to the dealer. Even though you are trying to beat the dealer, you can’t quite call him/her an opponent because he/she does not have a personal stake in the money that you win or lose. Remember that it is the casino, not the dealer himself or herself, who wins the money that you lose. Therefore, the relationship between participants that one finds in blackjack is somewhat less thrilling than in poker, where all players have some sort of financial stake in the game. Even though a blackjack table usually accommodates up to seven players, you have almost no interaction with your seatmates. We might call this element of isolation blackjack’s major flaw, in addition to the thin line between cheating and legitimate technique.

Even so, none of these aspects does much to eclipse the positive characteristics of blackjack. Firstly, it allows people to

It is a shame that the culture around blackjack is muddled by the ambiguous status of card-counting. Is card-counting really cheating, or are the casinos stopping skilled gamblers from using legitimate abilities? Despite all that, blackjack is still a fun and fascinating game. It is no surprise that it remains one of the old favorites.
