  Blackjack Surrender:

The phrase “Blackjack Surrender” is a rather ambiguous one. Sometimes, it refers to a playing option used either early or late in the game, where a player concedes (i.e. gives up), and is allowed to keep half his or her wager. Other times, it is used to indicate the variation on blackjack in which surrender is allowed. Though the meanings are related, we will only be discussing Blackjack Surrender as a whole game, as far as this article is concerned.

Blackjack Surrender is often played within the framework of the European version of the game. As such, it should be very easy for players already familiar with blackjack to learn. However, for those who are new to all kinds of blackjack, here are the basic rules: each player at the table compares his or her cards to those of the dealer. The point is to get as high a hand total as you can without going over twenty-one, in which case you lose. You may try to improve your hand by taking another card (hitting) , or may keep your existing hand (standing). Aces can count as ones or elevens, and all face cards count as tens. Blackjack Surrender functions by all these rules, as well, except for the fact that it allow for the surrender option mentioned in the first paragraph of this article. Not so complicated, really.

Still, be warned that not every casino has exactly the same surrendering rules. Most of the difference involves exactly when you are allowed to surrender your hand. In some establishments, you are only allowed to surrender early in the game. In others, there is also a “late surrender” option.

Blackjack Surrender

This brings us to the following issue: How do you know when to surrender? This is the main question on the mind of most players who sit down for Blackjack Surrender. If you surrender early, you lose less money. If you surrender later, you have probably placed more bets (especially if you have to put down more money in order to get additional cards, as in Pontoon Blackjack), and you lose more money, but you will have had more opportunities to wait for your situation to improve. Which is the better approach?

Actually many people surrender too early. This does ensure that the do not lose too much money, but on the downside, it prevents them from attaining what might have been a victory against the dealer. The point is that the surrender option is only useful in certain circumstances. Other times, it can prevent you from winning.

Here are a few tips to address the “surrender or not?” dilemma. Firstly, make use of the fact that the dealer has to show you one of his or her cards. If this card is an ace, surrendering may be a good idea, especially if your hand is between a fifteen and a seventeen. These are the basics, but you can find much more detailed advice on blackjack websites, or even from watching blackjack videos.

Here is a tip for using complicated lists of strategies. You can download and print out strategy cards to guide you in poker. These can be particularly useful if you are playing online, in the privacy of your own home. However, you might be able to use them in brick-and-mortar casinos as well, if you do not mind getting a few funny looks while you are at the table. Many strategy cards present their information with the help of easy-to-understand grids and diagrams, which are much less confusing than huge paragraphs of text directions.

Now that we have discussed the rules and strategies of Blackjack Surrender, we ought to discuss the actual experience of playing the game. What is it like playing blackjack, knowing that you can take advantage of this kind of surrender option?

Well, for a beginner, the surrender option can make an unfamiliar game seem extremely difficult and even overwhelming. Talk about being spoiled for choice! Not only do you have to worry about the usual hit-or-stand question, but you also have to wonder whether it’s best to just throw the towel in before you lose a lot of money. In this kind of scenario, choice does not increase freedom. It induces paralysis, or at least grave anxiety. A more experienced blackjack player, however, may relish both the freedom and the challenge of this new option. Joy, more strategies to play with! This is especially true if the player likes to experiment with different surrendering rules.

Basically, the introduction of the surrender option skews blackjack so that it becomes more of a skill-based game. Chance plays a relatively smaller role than it does in blackjack games without the surrender option. If you win, you can take more credit for your victories. If you lose, you have less reason to blame the outcome on bad luck, instead of your own limited abilities. You will end up taking more responsibility for what happens to your game—and your money. Some players will say that winning by chance and winning by skill can produce the same amount of money, so there is no real difference between them. However, such players are probably only concerned about the final tally, instead of the playing experience. In reality, believing that you are responsible for wins and losses does make a difference in how you play. If you believe you lost because of bad luck, you might be tempted to stay until it changes. However, if you believe the issue has more to do with your skills, you may be more likely to take a break from playing and polish your skills first before risking your money again.

In sum, Blackjack Surrender is very much like European Blackjack in that play consists of an exciting, carefully-modulated tension between luck and skill. However, Blackjack Surrender skews a little bit more towards the skill side. From another perspective, we may consider Blackjack Surrender to be one of the financially “safer” options in a casino. If you are planning to be very strict with your finances, or for some reason simply have a very conservative attitude towards gambling, Blackjack Surrender might be just the blackjack variation for you.
