  European Rules Blackjack:

Blackjack is one of the most popular casino games in the world. This is true whether we are talking about the American version or the European one. However, the appeal of blackjack has very little to do with fancy rituals or equipment, as in the case with Roulette or Keno.

European Rules Blackjack is perhaps the version that is familiar to most players. In many ways, it is similar to the American version. In both games, a player is dealt two cards, as is the dealer. The dealer displays one of his/her cards face-up. This card is called the upcard. The other card, displayed face-down, is called the hole card. Based on the value of the upcard, and what the player thinks is the most likely value or range of values for the hole card, the player decides whether or not to be dealt another card (hit) or to stick with the cards he or she already has (stand). The object of the game is to try to get a higher sum than the dealer has, without getting a number higher than twenty-one.

In fact, the game itself is sometimes called Twenty-one because it is the number everyone involved is thinking about. The name “blackjack” most likely arose when the game was brought over the Atlantic and into American gambling houses. A “blackjack” was the name American players used to refer to a certain hand: an ace and a ten. Under blackjack rules, this hand can give you a total of twenty-one because an ace can count as an eleven. Another card-value quirk of blackjack is that the jack, queen and king are all counted as tens, so each deck has sixteen tens.

The high number of tens in a deck counted with blackjack values gives rise to the interesting bet known as Insurance. This options is only available in the circumstance that the dealer has an ace as his/her upcard. This means that you can make another bet on the side, and you can win if the dealer turns out to get a blackjack, which means that his other card is a ten, for a total value of exactly twenty-one. If the players lose this bet, they forfeit both their main bet and the Insurance bet.

In many ways, the player has a great deal more freedom than the dealer, because the player is free to choose whether to hit or stand. The dealer, on the other hand, must follow very special rules when it comes to hitting or standing. He or she has to hit if the existing total is sixteen and below, and stand if it is over seventeen. The player’s freedom of choice is a great—but by no means 100% reliable—advantage, and many blackjack experts have employed different odds-calculating strategies to determine when it is best to hit or to stand. These strategies range from the so-called basic to the much more advanced and controversial, such as card-counting.

Though card-counting is not technically illegal, casinos are very much against the practice. Many dealers are trained to catch card counters, and some of the larger casinos may have tailored their surveillance systems to watch for signs of card-counting. If you are caught, you may not necessarily get into trouble with the law, but you can get into trouble with the casino. Please keep in mind that casinos are private, not public, establishments, and casino owners are free to forcibly remove you from the premises for breaking casino rules—even though you are not breaking the law.

Blackjack can be a little difficult for beginners to learn, especially if those beginners have become accustomed to other card-value systems. However, once a player gets his or her head wrapped around the basics (aces eleven, face cards ten), the game becomes much simpler. In fact, the resulting narrower range of card values helps make estimates and calculations much easier.

One interesting feature of blackjack is the fact that it can involve either eight or two people, depending on how you view the game. How? Even though a blackjack table can accommodate up to seven players, these players do not match their card-values against one another. Everyone matches his or her cards against those of the dealer. The outcome of another player’s hand has no bearing on your own, unless the dealer ends up with a total over twenty-one, in which case he automatically loses to all the players whom he has not matched his hand with yet in that round. (It pays to be the last player, in this case.) Otherwise, the only person you will be interacting with is the dealer. Blackjack does not offer the type of close player-to-player interaction one finds in poker. This may count against it for some players, but may constitute a good point for other players, who might find the high-octane atmosphere of poker too overwhelming.

The blackjack experience is quite a flexible one. Players who like to leave everything to chance may do so, choosing to “stand” all the time, or to choose “hit” or “stand” at random, without considering the odds of what the dealer’s hole card will turn out to be. On the other hand, players who like to match their skills against the house by employing basic blackjack strategy (not the same as card-counting, thank you) are also free to try this. The interesting mix of seemingly contradictory elements—chance and skill, freedom and powerlessness—are what make blackjack so compelling.

In sum, blackjack is a sly, hard-hitting cocktail of a game. It offers something for everyone, while always holding on to its own special rules and qualities. It’s not surprising at all that blackjack remains one of the most popular games in casinos the world over, despite the influx of machine-centered games and exotic imports. Though it may be somewhat confusing in the beginning, getting the hang of card values helps a great deal, and many new players will find themselves hooked very quickly. Add to this a good, honest dealer, and you have the makings of a great casino experience.
