  Las Vegas Blackjack:

The casinos of Las Vegas are fond of putting their own twist on popular games. This probably explains the widespread appeal of Vegas. In addition to providing fantastic shows and gorgeous hotels, connoisseurs of gambling will find interesting variations on familiar games.

In many respects, Las Vegas Blackjack is like the usual blackjack version, which is based on European rules. You, the player, get two cards. You play against the dealer. The dealer shows you only one of his or her cards and keeps the value of the other one hidden. The object of the game is to have the higher total value of cards without “busting,” i.e. going over twenty-one. In order to improve your hand, you can choose to “hit,” which means to be dealt another card. Or you can “stand,” which means that you have made the decision to keep your hand the way it is. Las Vegas Blackjack also keeps to the traditional manner of reckoning card values in blackjack. Face cards count as ten, and aces can be either ones or elevens.

In blackjack, the dealer has the disadvantage of having to hit or stand according to certain card totals, while the player has more freedom of choice. The different versions of blackjack tend to have slightly different rules governing dealer behavior. This is true of Las Vegas Blackjack.

In this version of blackjack, the dealer has to hit on all hands with a total of sixteen or less. If the existing total is seventeen or over, the dealer must keep his or her hand the way it is. A slightly different policy prevails in the casinos of downtown Las Vegas. This pertains to the circumstance known as the “soft” seventeen, which is when you obtain a seventeen because you have an ace that was counted as an eleven. (Example: an ace and a six) Dealers in casinos in downtown Vegas must hit on soft seventeens. This means that you might have a harder time guessing what the dealer’s hand is. He could have a hand of a very low value, or he could have something as high as a seventeen.

The relative uniformity of rules for Las Vegas blackjack dealers can help make winning a little easier for players. The strategies and the knack for estimating a dealer’s hand that you have honed at one casino are likely to serve you well at another casino, as well. You will not have to worry too much about learning different policies every time you step into a different casino.

Now, let us take a look at the less technical aspects of playing blackjack in Las Vegas. As any experienced gambler knows, playing games is not just about rule and scores. It is also about rituals, the attitude of casino staff, and all the other elements that come together to make up the playing experience. So, what is it really like playing blackjack in Las Vegas? How is it different from playing blackjack elsewhere? What are the good points and the bad points?

To begin with, playing at Las Vegas can be a bit slow, especially in the more crowded casinos. Do not expect to get one-on-one attention from the blackjack dealers whenever you want it. This does have its good points. A slower game might give you more time to cool down and think in between hands. This can be a good advantage for you, especially if you are planning to use complex strategies instead of leaving the whole game up to chance.

Also, do remember to tip your dealer when you are done, especially if you happen to be playing at one of the swankier establishments. Tipping well might seem like a difficult concession to make, especially if you have just lost a great deal of money at the blackjack table. However, do remember that dealing at blackjack is quite difficult work, especially since dealers can end up playing against up to seven players simultaneously. Given the popularity of blackjack, a dealer’s time and patience are often stretched to capacity, and sometimes beyond. Also, keep in mind that the money you lose goes primarily to the casino, not to the dealer. Given these facts, it seems more than reasonable that tipping the dealer is one of the unwritten rules of all the variations of blackjack. In addition, getting on the dealer’s good side certainly can’t hurt your game. If you are unsure how much money to leave, try to observe the more experienced players on their way out, or do a little asking around before you start playing.

While in Las Vegas, you be especially careful not to use strategies that the casino management does not like. This is especially true of the practice known as card counting. Card counting is not technically illegal. However, casinos are private establishments, so the management is free to instate and implement their own playing policies. Unless you happen to be Danny Ocean, card counting is definitely not recommended, particularly given the highly sophisticated surveillance systems and experienced staff employed in most large Vegas casinos.

Lastly, the large size of Las Vegas casinos—and the cutthroat competition between them—ensure that a variety of betting options will be available to you. One of the most interesting of these is the progressive blackjack option, where you place a small side bet, usually about a dollar, in the hopes of being dealt the jackpot hand. If you win, you can be awarded a huge jackpot that can be worth thousands, tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Each casino is likely to have its own jackpot hand. Be sure to ask about progressive jackpot at your favorite Vegas casino, even if the option is not conspicuously advertised.

All in all, playing blackjack in Las Vegas is an exciting experience, but one strangely (or paradoxically) more comfortable. It is true that playing rules make it harder to guess at your dealer’s situation. However, the high standards of Vegas casinos ensure that you will be stationed with a dealer who knows all the rules and complicated betting options available for this game. For a blackjack game done right, Vegas is a great bet.
