  Casino war:

Casino War is a relatively recent invention. It does not have the centuries of history of the classic card games, or the millennia-old pedigree of dice, which goes at least as far back as ancient India. However, it is becoming more and more popular in gambling establishments.

This game is actually based on the children’s game known as War. You do not need to be familiar with the original game in order to understand and enjoy the new card-based version.

The game starts with six decks of cards. Do not be alarmed. The game is neither overly complicated nor extremely long.

You do not need many people to play Casino War. One player plus a dealer will suffice. The player makes a bet. Then the dealer draws two cards, one for himself/herself and the other for the player. If the player’s card is higher, he she wins the same amount of money that he or she wagered, in addition to getting back the wagered money itself. If the dealer has a higher card, the player loses his/her money. The ranking of cards is the same as in poker (ace as highest, followed by king, queen, jack, then the numbered cards in descending order). All four suits have the same value. An ace of hearts is as good as an ace of spades.

Things start to get really interesting in the event of a tie (two cards with the same value. Different suits, of course. If they are the same suit, the dealer has some serious explaining to do.) In this case, you, the player, have a choice. You can surrender, in which case you lose half of your wager. Or, if you are feeling valiant, you go to war.

What does it mean to go to war? Does it mean that you and the other players do not band together to attack the dealer with a barrage of precision-targeted casino chips?

No, but the real answer is still a lot of fun. Firstly, the dealer has to “burn” three cards, which means to remove them from the deck without putting them into play. The player now has to up the stakes by doubling his or her original bet. Now two more cards are dealt, one to the player and one to the dealer. If the value of the player’s card is at least as high as that of the dealer, he/she wins back the money that he/she originally bet (excluding the money wagered after going to war). However, should the player lose, both the money from the original wager and the money put up after going to war are lost to the house.

Casino War

Bets

As one can see from the information in the “rules” section, playing Casino War involves making a long series of wagers. Money is won and lost in a gradual back-and-forth stream rather than in one fell swoop.

Betting in Casino War is a rather simple affair, since it only involves whether the value of one card will be higher or at least as high as the value of another. There are no complex systems of “outside bets” as in roulette.

As a side note, some (but not all) casinos give bonus payouts if you go to war, then tie with a dealer.

Strategies

The selection of cards is not up to the player, so most of the skill and strategy involved concerns the betting. When should you give up and when should you go to war?

It is better to go to war than to give up, especially if you get a bonus payout should you go to war, then get a card that ties with the dealer’s card. True, you do stand to lose more money, but over several hands, you are likely to get it back or even win some more money than you put in.

Perseverance is also important. Since odds are that you will lose about half of the time, your best approach is to stick with the game through several deals.

The Experience

Players who are acquainted with the original version of War might get a kick out of playing a children’s game that has been cleverly—or perhaps naughtily—adapted for use in an adult-oriented establishment. However, even people who have no experience of the children’s game will find much to enjoy.

First, there is the convenience of the betting system. You can switch from high to low wagers as the mood strikes you. You also have the option of surrendering, even though doing so is not advised.

Secondly, there is the mixture of chance and judgment inherent in playing Casino War. If you like leaving your fate—or at least your wager—entirely up to chance, perhaps Casino War is not for you. However, if you are excited by the prospect of constantly having to choose between giving up or raising the stakes, Casino War can be quite the thrill. Having some control—but not too much—over the outcome is what really makes some gamblers keep coming back for more.

On the whole, playing Casino War is an exciting and unpredictable experience. Play tends to go on through several rounds, during which many players lose, and then win, than lose again. This one-step-forward-two-steps-back progression might be somewhat frustrating at first, but many players soon get used to it, and even find that it is one of the reasons why they become so deeply sucked into the game.

Also, do not be surprised if you end up thinking of the dealer as your opponent. In many other casino games, your opponent is either a lifeless machine or another customer. In Casino War, though, you end up sitting in front of a dealer for a long period of time, willing with every deal of a new hand that your card is worth more than his. The dealer begins to seem like an enemy, and a rather powerful one at that, instead of a neutral party. Being able to trust your dealer is therefore particularly important when you are playing Casino War.

Though it may not have the pedigree of so-called classics like blackjack and poker, Casino War is an exciting, fascinating addition to the family of casino games. Even if you haven’t played War as a child, make sure to give Casino War a try next time you go gambling.
