  Craps:

Craps is a game played with two dice. The current version can be traced to New Orleans, but if one is willing to go further back into history, we can find the ancestor of the present-day game in England during the time of the Crusades, as can be attested by readers who are familiar with Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. As a result of this history, and also of the fact that many modern soldiers pass the time playing dice games, craps has an association with the military. Players can bet against each other (street craps) or against a house (bank craps).

First, the dice are rolled to establish a point number. Players then bet on whether the second roll of dice will make or win the point number (a Pass, Win or Right bet) or will not make that number (a Don’t Pass, Lose or Wrong bet). If the first roll is a seven or eleven, all Right bets win. If the shooter rolls a two, three or twelve, he or she has “crapped out.” And all players who have wagered Right will lose. However, the game and wagering still continue. The hope is to roll a four, five, six, eight, nine or ten in order to establish a “point” number for betting. If a seven is rolled, the Right-betting players lose and the round ends.

The shooter is the player who rolls the dice. The role of shooter only passes on to the next player once the round is over. The shooter has both rights and responsibilities, which is why not everyone is glad when it is their turn to be shooter. Not only is the shooter supposed to roll the dice, but he/she must bet the table minimum. Another person called the stickman presents several dice (about five) to the shooter, and the shooter selects two to use. The stickman is usually part of casino games of craps, and is not necessary for casual craps.

Bets

Though craps seems to be a relatively simple game, betting can get rather complicated. The Pass/Don’t Pass bets are just the tip of the iceberg. It is also possible to bet that a specific number will come out, instead of on the difference between the second roll and the initial roll that determined the point number. For example, a player may place simultaneous bets on different numbers (usually four separate numbers). If one of the numbers wins, the player wins the returns for that specific wager, but loses the money he or she bet on the other three possibilities. A variation on this multiple-bet format is the Horn High bet. A person bets small, equal amounts of money (usually in the form of a chip of a certain value) on the numbers two, three, eleven and twelve. An extra fifth chip goes onto a number of the player’s choice. There are other, more complicated bets involving the outcomes of multiple rolls of the dice.

Betting on craps provides quite a lot of options for a game that revolves around a pair of dice!

Strategies

Strategies on craps revolve around the types of wagers one can make. Dice-rolling strategies will not be included in this article because there can be a thin line between legitimate dice-rolling technique and tactics for cheating at dice.

The safest type of bet to make might be the conservative Horn-High bet, even though the returns can be quite small, given that you will lose the money you wagered on the other three numbers. Also, stay away from the multiple-roll bets because the rules of the game might prevent your wager from working out, and causing several regulation-based entanglements besides. For instance, the round might end unexpectedly before the series of rolls you bet on has a chance to play out properly. Also, if you are choosing between Pass/Don’t Pass, pick a side and stay with it over several rounds, rather than switching between them all the time.

The Experience

Since you do not need a great deal of special equipment in order to play craps, it is very easy to set up your own game with your friends. An informal gambling experience is both convenient and fun. Of course, this experience is much better if the people involved can cordially and honestly come to an agreement about paying. Gambling debts can be a source of major friction between friends.

Playing the game in a casino does have its own merits as well, since the people behind the casino often go out of their way to make it more exciting and ritualistic. (To dissuade gamblers from playing at home, perhaps?) Special craps tables are used, for example. Even the presence of the stickman can be considered as part of the effort to dress up the game. If you think about it, the casinos could just let the dealer present the dice, and the presence of the stickman is not really necessary. Still, it can make a player feel rather special, almost like royalty, to have someone around whose sole purpose it is to present him or her some dice.

The game is essentially the same whether you choose to play bank craps or street craps. Your choice really depends on your convenience and the type of atmosphere you prefer.

The use of amusing nicknames for various roles also adds a whimsical, nostalgic touch to the game. For example, saying “snake eyes” sounds much more glamorous than “a roll of one on each of the dice.” Though some nicknames will be recognized everywhere, there are also some nicknames specific to a certain region. Well-traveled gamblers will have fun learning all the different monikers.

Craps is a very flexible game in that it can be played in either a casual setting or with a great deal of ritual. Try both kinds, as each offers a fun hour or two of play. Also, it can be either a very simple game or a complex one of many possibilities, depending on the types of bets you want to use. It is no wonder that whenever fighting men—whether they were Crusaders or modern soldiers—gathered for some fun and relaxation in between battles, it is no wonder that some of them pulled out a pair of dice and started a game of craps.
