  Casino Hold ‘Em:

Casino Hold ‘Em is a spin on Texas Hold ‘Em, the most popular of all the poker variations. It is very similar to Caribbean Stud Poker. As the name suggests, Casino Hold ‘Em was expressly formulated for use in gambling establishments. As such, it is quite different from informal and tournament games of Texas Hold ‘Em

This game is relatively young, having been on the circuit for about a decade. It has room for two participants: the dealer and you. However, if the casino is particularly crowded, the dealer may be handling several players at once.

It starts with you sitting down and placing what is called an ante bet. Then you and the dealer both take two cards. More cards are dealt so that both you and the dealer can construct the usual five-card poker hands. After you have seen your hand, you can either fold or place what is known as an all bet. If you fold, your previous bet is forfeit. If you call, the game continues. At this point, the dealer must check if he has at least two fours. If he does not, the hand does not continue. You get a return on your ante bet, plus your call bet back. This saves the casino from potentially losing even more money, should the dealer be forced to play out a bad hand.

Here is how play proceeds if the dealer’s hand is good enough to pass muster. The dealer and the player(s) now compare their hands. If the dealer has a better hand, the player must turn over his or her existing bets. However, if the player has a better hand, he or she gets a return on his or her bets. This return would be different from the one he or she would have gotten if the dealer had lost by non-qualification. Of course, the third possibility is a tie. All bets are returned to their owners.

Poker fans who relish group interaction might find the one-on-one aspect of this game a tad constricting. Then again, a talented croupier is likely to be able to give even the most experienced, jaded players a run for their money. In other words, playing against a dealer instead of a tableful of other players can still be very intense and exciting.

The pace of play can vary, depending on the dealer, and how many players he or she is attending to. If you are the sort of person who likes time to think while deciding whether to raise or fold, you are likely to be grateful for the presence of other players needing the croupier’s attention. However, if you like your games played very quickly, you might find yourself missing the multi-player structure of non-casino Texas Hold ‘Em. You may get bored and frustrated waiting for the croupier to return to you, especially since the other players’ hands have nothing to do with yours.

At this point, it might seem that Casino Hold ‘Em suffers a bit in comparison with its distinguished predecessor. However, casinos have introduced many very important side-benefits to improve Casino Hold ‘Em. Most of these have to do with betting.

Casino Hold ‘Em offers several betting options not found in the usual non-casino version of the game. These so-called side bets are made according to the value of your own cards (the first two plus the flop cards), and can be placed when you make your first main or ante bet. For example, you can get good returns on a four of a kind or a flush. The bonus bet odds can vary from casino to casino, but they are usually good enough to make up for several folds.

The money you put up for side bets is not very large, but can build up over time if you are planning to play a good, long game. Given the odds of getting the bonus hands, you will probably have to keep playing for a long time in order to win a bonus. Keep in mind that the bonus is a device thought up by casino management in order to keep you at the table longer, and plan your budget accordingly. As intoxicating as poker can be, the bonus can make you even more of an addict. Think about planning how much money you will bet, or how much time you spend at the poker table. Otherwise, you may run out of money and/or time before getting to try all the other games in the casino. If you plan to try for the bonus bet, set aside some money in advance, so that you know how much money you have available for your main poker strategy. As many poker veterans know, betting strategy in poker is near inseparable from card strategy. Having to worry about bonus money is likely to have an effect on your main strategy, even if only as a (very potent) distraction.

To an extent, Texas Hold ‘Em strategies are adaptable to the Casino Hold ‘Em game. However, the one-on-one dynamics plus the presence of many types of side bet do mean that not every tactic carries over easily from one game to the other. Unfortunately, Casino Hold ‘Em being a young game, strategies specifically designed for it has not been fully explored. Still, this may be good news for poker experts who delight in devising and testing strategies of their own invention. If you wish, you may be one of these innovators, too, and make your mark on the gambling world by coming up with a famous strategy just for Casino Hold ‘Em! One of the best aspects of a game’s recent origin is that the possibilities are still being explored. This is true both for players and for the house.

This young game has demonstrated enormous potential. It is sure to become a fixture in more and more casinos as its popularity spreads. Check if your favorite casino has it on offer. If not, pressure the management until they make it one of their options. You’ll definitely enjoy giving it a try!
