  Red Dog:

Red Dog is a very unique and different type of poker. In fact, it is so different from other variations of the game that the only thing that really allows us to call it poker is the system of card rankings. Perhaps the game most like it is the poker variation known as In-Between. In fact, the two are often conflated with one another, especially since there are multiple card games that tend to get called Red Dog. Some of these other supposed Red Dog games are nearly identical to In-Between.

In Red Dog, you make an initial bet, after which you get two cards. You are hoping to get a third card with a value in between the first two. The evaluation of your initial hand is made easier by the fact that suits are largely irrelevant. Of course, the game is a little more complicated than that, because one of three things can happen once you have your first two cards. These possibilities are discussed below.

The first outcome is if you end up with two cards of the same value. Now, this may seem like a straight-out loss, since it is impossible for you to draw any card with a value in between that of your first two cards. However, the outcome is really not as bad as all that. What actually happens is that the dealer gives you a third card. If it has the same value as the first two (Wow, triplets!), you get a phenomenal eleven-to-one payout. If the third card has any other value, you get your bet back, as is, with no returns and no losses. This is what is known as a push.

So much for the first possibility. The second outcome is if you get two cards with values that come right after each other in the numerical sequence, such as a six and a seven. This one is much simpler. The result is a push. The hand is over with, and a new one can be dealt.

The third possibility is the one that actually allows for numbers to fall in between the first two card values. In mathematical jargon, this happens when the first card values are non-consecutive and non-equivalent. This type of hand has a feature known as a spread: the number of values in between the two cards. For example: a hand of two and five has a spread of two, since there are two numbers (three and four) between two and five.

The smaller or narrower the spread, the higher the potential payout should the third card’s value happen to fall between that of the initial two. For instance, if the spread is four or more, you get even money. Spreads of three may yield a payout of twice the original bet, while spreads of two cards can get you a payout that is quadruple the money you laid down. A spread of only one card, of course, pays out the most, at five times the original bet.

If players like their odds, they can put down another bet equivalent to their initial wager—in effect doubling the wager—before they receive their third card. This is one of the few instances in a Red Dog game where the players’ skill and judgment count, rather than sheer luck.

As you can see from the mechanics, Red Dog is largely a game of chance. Strategy and skill do not play a very big role in this game. However, there are some tactics and principles that you can keep in mind in order to better your chances. Firstly, you should think about when you should take the option to double your bet. Under what types of conditions would such a decision be advantageous? Of course, as in all gambling, there is an element of uncertainty. However, it is generally better to double your bets only when your spread is at least seven. Of course, this means that you will only get even money. However, over time, playing safe with your double-betting option does pay off. Try not to give in to the temptation to use it when your spread is very small or narrow. Yes, the payout can be huge. Still, raising your bet under such unfavorable odds makes less sense than using such an option where it has a bigger chance of paying off.

Red Dog Poker

It might be argued that Red Dog is a good way to introduced inexperienced card players to the dizzyingly varied realm of poker. There is some truth to this statement. Red Dog does have much simpler rules than other types of poker. It also demands less mental effort and induces less stress than more high-octane games.

Another major attribute of Red Dog that greatly influences the playing experience is that one plays against a dealer. Therefore, Red Dog does not provide the group interaction that is such a hallmark of games like Texas Hold ‘Em. Yet again, the, this could be either positive or negative, depending on what you look for in a game. If you treasure interacting with and analyzing a group of opponents, you might find Red Dog too tame and impersonal. However, other card game enthusiasts may see the advantage in playing with a dealer instead of other players. A dealer’s polite professionalism can be quite soothing. In addition, some people might prefer to play knowing that the other participant has less of a personal stake in the game, and is therefore less likely to cheat. After all, when you lose money, it is the casino owner, not the dealer, who profits the most.

All in all, Red Dog can be considered a kind of poker-lite. It shares a few features with other poker games, but does not demand as much of its players. In addition, you will be dealing with a slick, professional staff member instead of other players, which can be either frustrating or soothing, depending on what type of playing interaction you like. Red Dog can be a good rest for people who have had their nerves excessively frayed by the more demanding casino games. Unfortunately, the game’s various flaws mean that it has, justly, come nowhere near to eclipsing the popularity of other poker variations.
