  Reel slots:

Reel slots are the common term for the old-fashioned (or “original”) slot machines with mechanical wheels instead of virtual wheels displayed on a video screen. The rules for playing reel slots and video slots are the same. The only difference between them is the hardware, or lack thereof. Reel slots are also more likely to be operated solely by lever. Newer models, especially ones using video screens, are likely to be operated with a button, or to offer you the option of both lever and button. The lever gave rise to the old, amusing nickname for slot machines: the one-armed bandit. The lever was like the arm, and the machine itself was called a thief because players all too often found themselves spending more than they had intended. It seems that not only modern gamblers find slot machines addictive!

The rules of playing with reel slot machines are quite simple and are likely to already be familiar to you. The first thing is to insert coins—or bills, or tokens, or tickets—into the machine. The token or money necessary to begin using the machine is usually only worth a small amount (about twenty-five American cents) and purchases only one round of play. Then you pull the lever (or press the button) and watch the wheels spin. Hope like mad that when the wheels stop, three matching pictures are displayed. Should this happen…congratulations! You will win a jackpot. Of course, not all jackpots are alike. Some are very small, and may be worth only a few dollars once you cash in the chips. Every now and then, the machine will throw up a set of a very special picture (what exactly the picture will be depends on the machine) and you will get a very large jackpot worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Remember the floods of chips you see coming out of slot machines in movies where a character wins a gigantic jackpot? That does happen in real life now and again.

Bets

Betting in slots usually takes place in the form of small amounts wagered over and over again. You do not become a high roller in the same way as the person who decides to risk several hundred dollars on one spin of the roulette wheel. Therefore, it seems rather puzzling why such a huge proportion of casino revenues come from slot machines.

This brings us back to the addictive nature of the game. Exactly why are people so reluctant to stop pulling on that lever? Is it because watching the wheels spin is fun, and pulling on a long piece of metal is cathartic? Probably. Partly. However, another very important root of this phenomenon comes from most players’ attempts to play a statistical game with the machine. Most players believe that a certain percentage of lever-pulls must resort in a jackpot. Not a crazy conclusion. However, slot machines are programmed so that players won’t be able to tell when the next jackpot is coming. Two jackpots might happen in quick succession, followed by a very long dry spell. It is this irregularity that is so maddening and addictive. Essentially, people are not only betting that they will win, but that their stubbornness will outlast their losing streak.

Strategies

It is somewhat challenging to talk about strategies when the game is so simple and chance plays such a big role. Complex betting formats and strategies are to be found in a very special type of slot machine game called progressive slots, which exists in both reel and video versions.

Reel Slots

The real trick in playing with slot machines—whether reel or video slots—is knowing when it’s time to quit pulling on that lever. Not as easy as it sounds. However, with enough willpower—and perhaps a strict friend who can drag you away in time—you will not end up going too far over your limit. Try to set a specific amount of money as your limit. Once you have inserted that amount of money into the slot machine, stop—no matter how much money you might have won or lost.

Some players think that it pays to watch machines and know when to approach them. If they see that a machine has been yielding nothing but mismatched pictures for a long time, these players figure that the machine is due for a jackpot. This is not necessarily true. One can never really tell how long the losing streak will be. Only in extreme cases is an estimate of this kind remotely likely to work. As a result, there is always the fear that you have given up just a little bit too soon, and that the person who sits down in front of the slot machine after you will win a huge jackpot after two or three pulls.

The Experience

There is something very fun and whimsical—almost carnival-esque—in watching a real mechanical wheel instead of images on a video screen. The relatively low-tech nature of reel slots did not prove to be a disadvantage against video slots until several years after the latter were first introduced to casinos. Players still preferred to use the reel slots. Of course, the lingering popularity of reel slots might also be due to the fact that they seem more trustworthy to some players than video slots. However, the truth is that video slots have been carefully programmed to yield the same odds as reel slots. A gambler who understands the truth about slot machines but prefers reel slots probably does so out of nostalgia, or for other aesthetic purposes. Of course, since slot machines are all about fun and personal preference, such an opinion is not at all out of place.

Whether you play video slots or reel slots, there is something almost Zen-like in the soothing, almost mind-numbing repetition of pulling the lever, combined with the excitement of hoping for a jackpot. This paradoxical state of mind is perhaps part of the root of slot machines’ notorious addictiveness. Still, the sight of the spinning wheels on a reel (real?) slot machine, as opposed to the shiny, synthetic images on a video slot machine, are just one more good reason to get hooked.
