  5 Reel Slots:

Slot machines can come in either three-reeled or five-reeled versions. For both, the casino guest inserts a coin or token, pulls a lever and watches the wheels spin. The hope is that by the time all the wheels stop spinning, the images shown in the slot machine’s viewing window will all match, or show some sort of winning combination. When that happens, the person gets a payout. If you are interested in the historical slot machine, the earliest versions were mainly three-reeled machines. Five-reel slots became popular much later in the game.

The crucial difference between three-reel and five-wheel slot machines consists in the odds of winning. In short, the odds against you are higher if you play with a machine that has five reels. After all, you must hope for a match of five pictures instead of just three.

Why, then, would customers bother playing a machine with five reels? The answer comes when we discuss what are known as progressive slots. Under such a set-up, the payouts get larger and larger. The final jackpot is “fed” by all the money paid in by people who have played the game since the last jackpot was won. In five-reel slots, people lose more often, which means that the jackpots are bigger for whoever does eventually win. This is especially true if the casino uses a network set-up, in which the money in various slot machines is pooled into one giant jackpot. Understandably, winnings are even bigger in a network set-up than when machines are “standalone,” or have the jackpots confined to the money put into a single machine.

There is also the matter of the glory of victory. For some people, the appeal of going to a casino is the chance of “beating” the establishment by playing games that are stacked against you to a greater or lesser degree. (Casino games are designed to have a house advantage. Up to a point, this is an accepted part of the casino experience, and is not considered cheating.) To such individuals, playing five-reel slots is more exciting precisely because it is more difficult to win.

Slot machines are surprisingly addictive, even more so than some of the other casino games. Even seasoned gamblers suddenly wake from their slot-trance to find that they have spent more money on slot machines than they planned to do.

If you foresee yourself having this kind of problem, the best thing to do might be to find a casino where only chips or tokens are used. Purchase only the amount of tokens you plan to expend on slot machines. The inconvenience of buying more might discourage you from going beyond this limit. If the slot machines at your favorite casino accept quarters, make sure you only bring with you the money you plan to spend. Leave the rest elsewhere, perhaps in a safe location in your hotel room, or even the hotel safe.

The dual options of five-reel and three-reel slots can also be seen as a way to combat boredom, which is a legitimate issue when playing slots. After all, the skill dimension is virtually absent in slot machine games of all types. The motions are also quite repetitive. The charm of the pretty graphics begins to pall, and the customer begins to think of moving to another game. However, perhaps the customer is not willing to make the leap to something else. What, then, should he or she do with the remaining tokens? Keep playing, but at a different type of slot machine, of course.

5 Reel Slot

Switching from a three-reel machine to one with five reels offers just enough of a change to tamp down on boredom. This phenomenon is more subjective than objective. Speaking factually, there is very little difference between three-reel and five-reel slot machines, except for the odds of winning. However, moving to sit in front of a different machine with somewhat more complicated hardware might provide enough variation to renew your interest in the game. Therefore, offering both three-reel and five-reel slots in the same casino is a good way to offer customers a solution to this dilemma.

However, perhaps you are not thinking of switching machines whenever you get bored, and are planning to play the consistency strategy: staying at a single machine and playing until you finally win something, even if your winnings do not allow you to break even at the end of the day. This tactic works best in casinos with standalone slot machines. If the slot machines are networked, you may spend an hour sitting in front of a slot machine, only to have the person next to you win the casino’s progressive jackpot after three pulls, thus shrinking the jackpot for the next winner.

In that case, you will probably want some advice about whether to spend your time and money on a three-reel or a five-reel slot machine. The answer depends on your budget and goals. Are you after thrills and big prizes, and is your budget not a pressing concern? If so, five-reel slots are for you. Then again, if you are looking for a slightly safer bet, with smaller payouts but higher chances of winning, you might try your luck at the three-reeled machines.

Though the five-reeled machine is a relative latecomer on the gambling scene, it is understandable why it is also reasonably popular. They offer bigger thrills than the three-reel machines, which can spice up a fun but routine game. These thrills consist of the larger jackpots, and also the added suspense in waiting for five, rather than just three, wheels to stop spinning. In addition, five-reel slot machines offer all the other benefits of the earlier type of slot machine. These include the simplicity of the rules and mechanisms, which mean that even inexperienced gamblers can easily get in on the action. It is no surprise that some people choose five-reel machines over three-reel ones, despite the steeper odds against them.

If you are a true devotee of slot machines, the five-reel machine is an exciting variation on the game you love.
