  Roulette:

Roulette is played by dropping a small ball onto a roulette wheel. The surface of the wheel is divided into several numbered compartments, which may be red or black. Before the ball is dropped, players make bets on where the ball will finally land. The wheel is usually spun very quickly, to the point that it becomes difficult to clearly see the numbers. The ball must be dropped while the wheel is spinning quickly. This has the advantage of preventing the person who drops the ball from influencing the outcome. The slots are numbered 1 to 36, in addition to a slot numbered zero. In some casinos, there is also a double-zero (00) compartment.

Bets

As this is a casino game, betting usually takes place via tokens or chips. Usually, roulette chips do not have a denomination written on them, resulting in a flexible value. In fact, different roulette chips may have differing values within the same game. It all depends on how much a player buys in. For example, two players may have ten chips each. Player A buys in $100. Each of his ten chips would be worth $10. Player B buys in $500, so each of his chips would be worth $50.

Roulette

There are many different types of bets a player can place in roulette. The more specific the bet, the more likely it is that the player will lose. On the other hand, the return on such bets is generally larger. The “safest” bets to make will only be worth even-money if the player wins. In such cases, the player has usually bet that the ball will land on an even number, an odd number, a red compartment, a black compartment, on a number from 19-36, etc. If you bet on a specific number, you are much more likely to lose your money, but should you win, you may get something like six times your initial bet.

Betting becomes somewhat more complex if we factor in the European variation on the rules. One rule is called “in prison.” This happens when a player makes an even-money bet and loses. The lost money is put “in prison.” It has not yet gone into the house’s reserves. Should the player win on the next spin, he gets back half of the money he or she lost.

The roulette board plays a big part in the betting process. Players place their chips on a certain square on the board in order to denote the type of bet they are making. If they feel like taking a risk—and possibly winning more money—they can place their bets on one of the squares denoting a specific compartment on the wheel. However, the board also has other squares denoting “outside” bets (bets on a combination or range of numbers). There are three squares denoting a bet on the numbers 1 to 12, 13 to 24, and 25 to 36, for example. One might also place a column bet, in which one wagers that any of the three numbers printed on the same column of the roulette board will be where the ball comes to rest.

Even so, “big part” does not necessarily mean “indispensable.” One could conceivably play roulette without the board by recording the bets on a piece of paper. This might save both time and table-space. We might even say that the board is only present for aesthetic reasons. This does not mean that the board ought to be scrapped. Aesthetics and accessories are a big part of the gambling experience. Despite the fact that it takes up more time, the ritual of placing one’s bets using a roulette board adds to the excitement of roulette.

Strategies

Since the roulette wheel is operated by a member of the casino staff, the player can only influence the game by choosing a number. This section, therefore, can be subtitled “how to pick a number.” The most important thing to remember is that each spin is an independent event; the outcome of each spin has nothing to do with the outcomes of any of the others. Keeping track of the previous spins is unlikely to do much to improve your odds of winning.

The Experience

Part of the joy of roulette comes from appreciation of the paraphernalia: the little bouncing ball, the blurred sparks of reflected light on the flashing wheel. Enjoyment of it has very little to do with the thrill of pitting oneself against a skilled opponent. Roulette is almost entirely governed by chance. It also takes a while to set up, so it is quite a slow-paced game.

Roulette is a very fun game, but it is not for everyone. One reason is accessibility: it is easy to buy and carry around a pack of cards. However, a trip to the nearest casino is necessary if you want to play roulette. The game is also unlikely to be the darling of players who treasure a high level of skill in the games they play. On the other hand, roulette is a particularly exciting game for gamblers who like to make a big event out of games, or people who relish the glitter and liveliness of casinos.

With all these two-edged swords, however, the one thing we can call unreservedly good about roulette is its betting rules, which are extremely flexible. If a gambler feels like it, he or she can be a high roller, betting large sums of money on risky wagers. The other extreme is the person who prefers safe bets. This latter group has the option of sticking to even-money wagers, which yield no winnings, but allow a person to keep playing and basking in the casino atmosphere without breaking the bank. Roulette is a game that can accommodate players on a wide range of budgets, with a variety of attitudes towards gambling. Whether you want to try to gain large winnings, or are simply in the game for the fun of it, roulette has something to offer you.
