  Fan Tan:

Fan-Tan is also referred to as Fantan, which is actually a simplified Chinese word that literally means repeated divisions. It is a form of gambling that has always been played in China. This particular game has quite a few similarities to roulette.

Although it is true that Fan-Tan is no longer as popularly played in China as it used to be, it actually was once a favorite pastime of the Chinese people in the United States of America. The reason for this is because Fan-Tan has been replaced by other traditional Chinese games such as Pai Gow and Mah Jong.

The large Chinatown located in San Francisco serves as the home to dozens of Fan-Tan game houses, especially in the nineteenth century. In fact, according to the statements of Jesse Cook, the former police commissioner of the city, Chinatown has around fifty Fan-Tan games. Those who are still interested in playing Fan-Tan do not have to fret about this because Fan-Tan can still be played in some casinos located in Macau.

Rules

The rules of the game are actually pretty simple. A square will be marked right in the center of the table or a metal piece shaped into a square will be laid on top of that spot, the sides marked with the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4. The banker will be putting a double handful of coins, tiny buttons, dried beans as well as some beads, which the banker will be covering with a bowl made of metal, or what is more popularly known as a tan koi.

Afterwards, the players can then bet on the numbers, as they set their stakes on the side numbers of the square. They can also bet on the corners, since those are where the numbers two and three can be found. And when every bet has already been placed, the bowl will then be removed and the tan kun, or the croupier, makes use of a tiny bamboo stick in order to get rid of the buttons from the heap. This can happen four at a time, until the last batch is finally obtained.

If the heap has four buttons, the backer behind the number four wins, and if the number is three, the player backing up number three also wins, and so on and so forth. A commission worth five percent will be deducted from the stake by the banker, which means that the winner, who is supposed to win four times of his winning amount, will have a reduced amount of final winnings.

The players must never forfeit their turns. If they do not have a card that can play against the present condition of the table, that certain player must also contribute one chip to the pot. However, if there is a card that can play against the table, then the player must use that particular card. In the event that there are a few cards that can be played, the players must choose among all of the cards.

Once it is found out that the players have been holding out some cards against the table, and then instead of placing one chip to the pot, that player will be penalized with three chips. The players will be playing the table until a certain player has no cards left.

Bets

The betting limits that have been readily set for the game are determined when the game finally begins. These betting limits do not actually limit any losses to the bank since more than one bet can actually be placed by every player.

The betting layout is inclusive of the Joker card that has been left face up on the center of the table. The Joker was placed there in the first place so that one of the short sides will be placed right in front of the banker. A number will be assigned to teach of the corners of the Joker card.

In Fan-Tan, the bets that are placed on the corners of the Joker are solely on the number itself. The bets that are placed on the side of the Joker will be for the numbers of the two corners that are adjacent with one another.

The croupier places a huge quantity of tiny beads or buttons right in the middle of the square and then covers them with the use of a bowl made of metal or called tan koi. The objects used can be coins, any small object that can be easily counted, beans. However, the most commonly used items are buttons, because the traditional holes make it much easier to facilitate in moving them around with the use of a stick that is relatively pointed.

Once the metal bowl is removed with the stick, usually a bamboo, the croupier gets to remove four buttons at a time. This continues on until there are no more than four buttons left.

Strategies

Once the players have finally become much more comfortable with the simple basics or mechanics of the game Fan-Tan, they will soon realize that it is pretty easy to figure out the easy Fan-Tan strategies. Basically, Fan-Tan is a game that involves the need to plan ahead and a set of strategies, not merely dependent on the luck associated with the draw. If players are good at keeping track of the behavior as well as the motives of their competitors on the table, they can easily become a master at playing Fan-Tan.

Experience

In other areas all over the world, Fan-Tan is referred to as Dominoes. It is actually one of the rarest and popular card games that involve absolutely not tricks or bids. There are also other games that involve Fan-Tan in their assortment of card games. For instance, Fan-Tan is included in a separate round of Barbu, which is regarded by many as a French monstrosity of a game of cards.

This card game is relatively easy to learn, play, and win at. In fact, the winner of this game can be quickly determined in around ten to twenty minutes.
