  Video pokers:

Video poker rules are much the same as those of “real” poker. The rankings of cards and hands are the same, with aces as the highest cards and twos as the lowest. As with real poker, royal flushes are the best hand. In a casino, you generally play against the machine instead of another customer. It is very much like a regular poker game with two players.

It might be difficult to find video versions of the less common varieties of poker. Of course, popular varieties such as Texas Hold ‘Em are readily available, especially on gambling websites. Video poker machines in casinos are generally touch screen-operated and situated on a bar-top. Online gaming sites are formatted for desktops and laptops, so you manipulate your cards and make your bets with your mouse and keyboard.

In casinos, many video poker machines are coin-operated, generating a rather ironic similarity to slot machine games. (Poker is one of the most skill-heavy gambling games, while slot machines are almost completely to do with luck.) You usually have a choice of inserting bills or coins.

Online casinos generally offer versions of video poker. Some of them involve you playing with other people in the same virtual casino. However, you may also decide that you would rather play with a virtual player.

Bets

As with slot machines, there are also progressive video poker machines. However, these are not as common as video slots because many of the poker games in casinos are done in “real” poker. These machines display the current value of the jackpot. Most progressive video poker machines are standalone. Given the skill-oriented nature of poker, connecting the machines into a network would be far too disruptive. (The situation is different for the more chance-oriented slots, as evinced by the popularity of connected progressive slot machines.) Of course, do not assume that every win will get you the progressive jackpot. Ask casino staff about what you have to do to win the progressive jackpot, but in general, you get the big jackpot if you end up with a royal flush. For greater convenience and better returns, use coins in a bucket instead of bills. The better returns make up for the resultant slower pace of play.

Strategies

Video poker strategies are similar but not identical to, non-video poker. Strategies involving card odds are much the same, such as the oft-touted tactic of staying conservative even if your first card is an ace and being especially careful to avoid over-drawing.

Still, there are some differences. For one thing, the psych-out strategies involved in non-video poker are largely irrelevant if you are working with the video version. However, the way the machine is set up gives you more options to maximize your chances.

For example, not all slot machines have the same payout system. Try asking around and finding out which machine the employees use, so you can get some insider information on where you can get the best chances of winning. Also try to ask which machines are short-pay and full-pay. Full-pay machines will generally give better returns, so try to stick to those.

In addition, there are certain video poker games that will bleed you more than others. In general, the worst ones are Deuces Wild games. The jackpots can be very high, but you will lose a great deal of money, so such games are rarely worthwhile. Texas Hold ‘Em is a better bet.

The kind of coins you use to operate a video poker machine can also make a difference. Try using nickels instead of quarters. Why? If you input quarters, the machine will only give you a few hundred coins should you hit a jackpot. If you use nickels, you will get a few thousand coins, which more than makes up for the fact that a nickel is only a fifth the value of a quarter.

The Experience

Video poker may not have the same glamour as its non-virtual predecessor. However, an online version of video poker can be very convenient for people who are unable to make the trip to a casino, or are unable to schedule a poker game with friends.

The often solitary nature of video poker may also be a relief to players who have a great deal of trouble with the psychological aspects of playing poker. For such people, the effort of “psyching out” opponents and hiding one’s emotions from them may be stressful and distracting rather than exciting. These players are likely to prefer playing video poker, because it will enable them to focus more on the cards than on maintaining a perfect poker face.

One potential complaint against video poker is that the pot might be small, given that you are not playing against a large number of other opponents who will add to the pot. However, progressive video poker machines have gone some way towards making up for this. It is entirely possible for a skilled player to go to a machine that has built up a large jackpot, then to win it after a few hands or rounds.

It is almost impossible to talk about video poker without online gambling entering the discussion. Online poker can be very convenient, since players do not have to travel or try to adjust their leisure schedule to the free time of other players. However, the more technical aspects of online video poker might be a hassle since the matching and raising of bets happens with mouse-clicks rather than through pushing real chips or bills forward. Since this process happens many times throughout the game, it can be very annoying, or even downright confusing if the site or program you are using does not have a user-friendly interface.

The debate over whether video poker is better than “real” poker can never be entirely resolved, since what seems convenient to one person can be merely boring to another, and so on. It is really up to you to understand what you really want out of gaming, and to choose accordingly.
