  Aces Bonus Poker:

Aces Bonus Poker is another one of the video poker games currently gaining popularity in casinos, particularly in Las Vegas. However, it is not just another game involving cards on a screen. It does bear similarities to the more familiar game of Bonus Poker, but it has a very unique set of rules that make game-play much more exciting.

It makes sense to begin by talking about how ace cards are treated. Here, each ace card is labeled with one of the following symbols: A, C, E and $. This is why this game is sometimes referred to as Aces$ (rather than plain “Aces”) Bonus Poker. These aces and their markings are important because the highest payout you can possibly get in this game comes about if the dealer happens to give you the aces in the order of A-ace, C-ace, E-ace and $-ace. True, such a specific outcome is highly unlikely. Even so, the payout is wonderful: eight hundred times the amount of money you invested in your wager. You may also get the same payout if the dealer happens to give you the aces in reverse spelling order. (Keep in mind that the “dealer” we are talking about here is a virtual one, not an actual person. You are playing on a machine, after all.) There are other hands that can net you a nice payout. A royal flush also pays out eight hundred to one. Keep in mind, however, that you are more likely than not to get a hand that does not pay at all.

Aces Bonus Poker

Besides the rule about the marked aces, Aces Bonus Poker is very much like Bonus Poker. Like that other game, players are dealt cards, and may then substitute in some replacement cards in an effort to improve their hand. Extra “bonus” money is given if certain cards or hands are dealt. It is, in essence, Bonus Poker with added frills. Still, this is not a bad thing. Aces Bonus Poker is one game in which the so-called frills are charming enough to attract a significant following.

Now, a note for Draw Poker fans: video poker games like Aces Bonus Poker or Ace Invaders are where you will have to most luck finding Draw Poker-type games in a casino. The very simple types of Draw Poker games, such as Five Card Draw, are not offered in casinos very often. In a manner of speaking, your favorite games have come in through the back door, under a lot of technical and/or technological wrapping.

At this juncture, it makes sense to discuss Aces Bonus Poker strategy. The good news is that this game does bear some useful similarities to other video poker games. This is due to the fact that the programming for scrambling and randomly selecting numbers (which are, of course, attached to virtual playing cards) is practically identical across the different kinds of video poker. Therefore, if you have played those kinds of poker before—especially Bonus Poker—you can adapt those strategies to Aces Bonus Poker very easily.

Still, Aces Bonus Poker does bring up the following critical strategic question: When should you prioritize getting a high-ranking poker hand, and when should you abandon that strategy in favor of pursuing the bonus? Using statistical game-strategy software can help you to answer that question. You might also try buying books devoted to poker strategy. If you like, you may try your local bookstore, which does have the advantage of allowing you to read through a few pages. However, a much wider selection is to be found online.

Now that we have tackled the more technical aspects of this game (rules and strategy), let us describe what it actually feels like to play it.

Firstly, let us discuss the effect of the rule that sets this game apart from other types of Bonus Poker. The idea of marking the aces (or should we say “aces$?”) is a charming touch. To some, this might seem like useless, shallow frou-frou—nothing to get excited about. However, people with this opinion may be misunderstanding the core of the casino experience. Gambling, after all, is not just about winning money or exercising your calculating skills. It is also about enjoying the little things, like the quirky rules and rituals casinos add on to games in order to make them more fun. Otherwise, there is no reason to try to seek out a good casino. If atmosphere and accessories do not matter, one might as well just go to the nearest barely-legal gambling den.

Another major feature of the playing experience is wracking your brains over your playing objectives. Do you want to win money by getting plenty of good hands in the sense of the usual rankings, or do you want to throw away a potentially good hand for a slightly better chance at the big bonus payoff?

Of course, a player is free to just forget about the whole idea of a bonus, and play a normal game of draw poker. They can focus on conventional poker strategy and never turn aside from that to pursue a bonus hand. If the bonus never appears, fine. If it does, great. However, the design of the screen is such that you have a hard time bringing about this sort of self-induced amnesia. The decision to abandon the chase for the elusive hand suddenly seems stupid and cowardly, instead of sensible, which it actually is in many cases. Blame the blinking lights on the screen that keep reminding you of the big bonus, hovering just out of reach, which might be yours if you would step off the beaten path and go for it. Of course, consciously building your strategy around the slim chance of getting a bonus sometimes pays off. Unfortunately, this doesn’t happen very often. Try to consider your chances dispassionately, instead of being swayed by the advertising built into the game’s interface design, and even the game’s name.

Whichever way you decide to play Aces Bonus Poker, you are sure to find something in the game to enjoy. You may have a pulse-pounding time trying to chase the elusive bonus, or you may ignore the bonus and enjoy a good, old-fashioned game of Draw Poker. Either way, a fun time at the poker machine is a bet with great odds!
