  Bonus Poker:

This game review will be a little unusual because in many cases, the term “Bonus Poker” refers not to a single game (as does, say, Deuces Wild) but to a sub-category of games. Here, we refer to video poker games based on the rules of Jacks or Better. However, the sub-category’s distinguishing feature is that Four of a Kind hands yield higher payouts. The games within this sub-category vary because they prize different kinds of Four of a Kind hands. For example, some prefer four Sevens, four Kings, four Deuces, etc.

Rules

To people who already have familiarity with Jacks or Better, a description of Bonus Poker rules will be at least partially redundant. However, we are not assuming that all our readers have this knowledge, so we will describe these core rules. The basic unit of each game is the card hand, which is only played for a few minutes. At the beginning of each hand, you place your bet and are dealt out five cards from a virtual deck. You take a look at your five cards and, based on your chances of getting a higher-ranked poker hand, decide on whether you will get rid of some of your cards—or even your entire initial hand. More cards will then be dealt to you until you have a complete poker hand again. Hopefully, your calculations and luck are on your side, and your final hand (that is, if you changed any cards) is better than your original one. You then get a payout based on the payout structure used by that particular game.

Type of bets

The types of wagers available to players are the same for all variations of Bonus Poker—and indeed, for virtually all types of video poker. You are only allowed to bet up to five tokens or virtual coins. The coin value varies, as you are frequently permitted to select a coin value. The relatively limited options help keep betting rather simple, as is often the case in games that are not based on pure chance. In Draw Poker-based games, your decisions do have an impact on the outcome of each hand, so it makes sense to keep the betting simple, thus giving you more “mental space” to concentrate on your calculations. Otherwise, you might be overwhelmed and turned off by the complexity of the game. (Notice how it is games like Roulette that have extremely complicated betting options?)

Bonus Poker

Be warned that the bonuses for the maximum bet are several times higher than those for, say, a single coin. Thus, many players choose to play the maximum bet at every spin in order to put themselves in line for the largest payouts. After all, it is only a few coins’ difference, right? Wrong. Experienced players of video poker know that you are likely to go through many hands over the course of a single sitting. These maximum bets will add up, and you may suddenly rouse yourself at the end of a session to find that you have spent much, much more money than you intended. In order to avoid this nasty surprise, do keep strict tabs of the money you spend. Have a calculator next to you, for example, so you can easily keep a running total. This may seem extremely annoying, but in some respects, the practice of interrupting your game at frequent, regular intervals can help you keep a cool head and avoid impulsive strategic choices. Decide on your maximum total wager before you sit down to play, and make sure that you do not stray from this amount.

Then again, this is not to say that playing the maximum bet is a bad, irrational decision. If you have the funds for it and/or you do not plan to play many hands anyway, it just might be in your best interest to pursue the maximum bonus.

Strategies

Assuming you want to take a more no-nonsense approach to this game, do not shape your main strategy around the bonuses. Though the prizes are high, your chances of getting the required hand are quite slim.

Experience

As far as playing experience is concerned, there are certain aspects that Bonus Poker games inevitably share with other video poker games. Firstly, there is the fact that these games only involve one player. You will not have a circle of people playing on networked machines set up for a tournament, or a geographically disparate group of players doing an online competition. The participants of this game are strictly limited to you and the machine. People with a more “social” approach to their gambling may find this experience boring, lonely, or even claustrophobic. Then again, there will always be others who focus on the good side of the Bonus Poker player’s solitude: the fact that you only need to pay attention to your own decisions, and not those of other players. Also, there is the fact that these games are played on video machines or laptops. Some players may complain that they miss the physicality of laying down chips or picking up cards. Then again, there are others who will be relieved that they do not have to go through this sort of hassle.

Now on to the effect of the bonuses. Your experience of the game depends on your approach to playing strategy. Will the bonus play a large part in your tactical considerations, or are you planning to play as if the bonus does not exist? If you choose to run after the bonus hands, your game play will be spiced up by the thrill of anticipation. However, the disadvantage of this approach is that you might miss smaller but easier prizes, or even extend your playing session beyond what is financially feasible for you. If you take a more main game-focused approach, you are more likely to come out of the game with some money, even if you do not get the large bonuses. If you are lucky enough to get a bonus hand, then it simply comes as a lovely surprise.
