This is another of the many variations of video poker available online. Like its cousins, it is based on draw poker, and distinguishes itself by its quirky bonus features, which allow you two chances to discard some cards and take new ones.
Rules
For those people unfamiliar with poker, here are the basic rules. After placing your bet, you are dealt five cards. You are then allowed to discard any cards that you think are stopping you from getting a good poker hand. There are really no rules about what kind of choice you can make. If your hand looks very good already, you may decide to just keep it the way it is, without discarding anything. Otherwise, you might take the other extreme choice, and discard everything so you can draw a completely new set of cards. Conventional poker hand rankings are used to determine your payouts, with a royal flush yielding the highest jackpots, especially if you happened to have wagered the maximum bet. If you are a newcomer to poker and haven’t memorized the different card hands (and their rankings) yet, you might want to find an illustrated list of the hands online. Keep that site open as a side window when you play, or print out the list and keep it handy.
Now on to the bonus features that make this particular draw poker variation so special. Firstly, take not that there are no wild cards or Jokers. The bonus features are elsewhere, such as in the Aces. If you happen to have gotten two Aces on the first draw, you are allowed two chances to switch your cards, instead of just the usual one. This means you have more opportunities to better your hand, if it turns out that your first substitution made your odds worse, not better. This is the feature that gives the game its name: getting double Aces gives you twice the usual chances to draw better cards.
Bets
As with many other games of this type, the minimum bet is a single coin. Such a bet will, of course, always give you the lowest payout for that hand. The lowest possible hand you can have and still get a payout is a pair, which at least gets you even money. In other words, Double Draw Aces offers you slightly better odds than some other video draw poker games, because you can get a relatively low hand and still get some money. In some other games, you need at least two pairs of cards with the same values. However, players who are used to having to strive for each additional gain might be disgruntled at the fact that the payouts for a single pair and two pairs are pretty much the same, even though the difficulty of getting the latter is much higher.
The highest possible payout is, of course, for the royal flush hand, which are basically the highest cards (i.e. the face cards) in a single suit. If you happen to have wagered the maximum bet of five coins, the payout is a spectacular 4,000 coins. Still, even if you have only bet one coin, the payout for a royal flush (500 coins) is still pretty good.
Strategies
Of course, one of the major strategic questions is how you know what cards to discard. Note that any cards you decide remove from your hand in the double draw will be put back into the deck. In other words, there is a chance they will show up again when you take more cards. Be sure to factor this possibility into your calculations.
Always remember to think of your card hand as a single unit. Remember, high cards alone are not likely to get you big winnings. Let’s say that you have a King, but you only need one more card to get a straight flush or full house. In that case, you ought to discard your King. Though it has a high value as an individual card, it is not going to help you.
The privilege that a pair of Aces offers can affect your strategy. If you happen to get these cards, do not let them go. If you substitute cards on your first draw and end up with at least three of a kind, it is time to “Take the Win,” or in other words, stop playing with that hand and collect your payout.
Experience
If you find the presence of other people distracting, this game is for you. You will not be worrying about accidentally revealing your own cards via your facial expression, gestures, etc. You can also take as long as you like to make your decisions. This means you can focus entirely on strategy, without worrying about scoping out another player’s circumstances, or trying to keep your own under wraps. The fact that wild cards are absent from the game can actually make it easier for you, if you plan to play this as a game of strategy rather than luck. Without wild cards, you can make your calculations with a minimum of distortion. Calculations are made easier by the fact that you mainly focus on your own hand, instead of having to beat that of another player.
Actually, the only real distortion comes with the opportunity presented by getting two chances to draw if you are dealt two Aces. This is an exciting chance to come up with a really good hand of cards before you finally collect your payout. Practice your strategy so you can learn how to maximize this rule.
Double Draw Aces is a great game for people who relish strategy and calculation in their games. You are called on to exercise your skills (perhaps even twice) every time you are dealt a new hand. This is a game for people who like to have some control in the outcome of play, instead of sitting back passively, and making bets on the outcome. The betting rules may be very simple and bare-bones, but the complexity of the game’s skill dimension more than makes up for that fact.
