  Tens or Better:

Tens or Better is a video poker game. However, as compared to its ancestor Jacks or Better, it has a slightly more generous paytable. Instead of needing at least a pair of Jacks to get even money, here any pair of Tens will do. The lower threshold makes winning money a little easier. You are more likely to find it online than in land-based casinos.

Rules

Tens or Better does not really make many changes to the classic Jacks or Better rules. This is still a Draw Poker game with five-card poker hands. After you have laid down your wager, the virtual dealer (i.e. the program) gives you five cards out of a virtual deck. You have the option of rejecting some of the cards, or even the entire hand, and being dealt more cards to reconstitute a five-card hand. You only have one chance to make this substitution and will not be allowed to return to your original hand, so make your choices carefully. As you can see, basic Draw Poker is rather simple, so it is no wonder that it often serves as a player’s introduction to poker in general.

This game is called Tens or Better in reference to its payment schedule or paytable. This is because a pair of Tens is the lowest hand that will get you a payout—even money, in this case. This is just slightly better than the payment arrangements in Jacks or Better, which, of course, require at least a pair of Jacks. As such, Tens or Better is actually the opposite of other video poker variants, whose distinguishing feature is a special high-ranking bonus hand, made possible by cuts to or even outright elimination of payouts for low-ranking or mid-ranked hands.

Types of Bets

Tens or Better is not the sort of game that will surprise you with ingenious betting options. It sticks with the standard betting structure found in most video poker games. Then again, players who are intimidated by the labyrinthine betting rules of games like Roulette might find the simplicity of video poker wagers quite refreshing.

Tens or Better

Here, players can bet up to a maximum of five virtual coins or tokens. They are also allowed to specify how much a coin is worth in monetary terms. Common amounts include 5 cents or 25 cents per coin. Of course, if you like, you can download a “for fun” version of most casino games, and most likely you will find that several online casinos include this option for Tens or Better, as well. This way, you can still enjoy video poker without having to worry about losing money, or getting into legal trouble. Since gambling regulations can be confusing, and often change due to a high level of legislative debate, it might be better for you to simply steer clear of the question and just remove money from the equation altogether, depending on what happens to be going on in your district.

Players are often advised to consistently wager the largest number of coins at every spins. This can add up to quite a bit of money if you happen to play a lot of rounds in one sitting. Still, the best approach is to make decisions based on what is best for you, given your own financial situation. The advice on gambling websites should just be taken as a collection of suggestions, not some sort of one-size-fits-all sacred dictum.

Strategies

The paytable of Tens or Better rewards a conservative approach to the game. For instance, if you already have some cards that will guarantee a payout (even if it is low) do not let go of those cards in the hopes of chasing a major jackpot. Trade the other cards away, instead. If you check out sites that give you advice on video poker strategy, you will find that many of them recommend that you keep pairs together. This is a great game for people who like to stick to “safe” strategies.

Tens or Better Video Poker

Experience

Tens or Better is a bit unusual among video poker games because it augments the lower end rather than the higher end of the paytable. Games that emphasize low-ranking hands tend to give payouts that are smaller or more frequent. Do not look for spectacular bonuses for special Four of a Kind hands here. However, this is not a bad thing at all, since it means that you have more chances to make some money, even if it is not necessarily a great deal of money.

Then again, the small victories you score might just spur you to keep on playing, in which case you might simply pour all your winnings—and more—back into the game. If you want to prevent this from happening, decide upon a limit before you start playing. Do not exceed this amount, no matter what happens over the course of a session. (Depending on your outlook, both losses and victories can encourage you to keep playing longer than you originally planned. If you hit a losing streak, you might get yourself to believe that you will soon be “due” for a win if you just hang in there a little longer. If you start to win a little, you may become more confident, and get the feeling that you have bigger victories ahead of you. Neither theory really holds much water.)

We can say that this game is ideal for players who must be frugal with both their money and their time. It is easier to encounter paying hands here, so the chances are higher that you will get an ego-boosting victory without waiting for too long. Then again, remember that in these games, randomness and chance still play a big part, and even a very good player can hit a very long losing streak. As a result, all assertions of your chances of winning and losing must be made in terms of low or high probability. Nothing is really for certain, but to many players, that is just part of the excitement of the game.
