  Video slots:

Video slots are very similar to “regular” or mechanical slots. One parks oneself in front of a slot machine, inserting the proper amount of coins, tokens or paper tickets. One pulls the lever (or presses the button, in the case of some of the machine models), hoping the set of wheels will display a set of matching pictures or other winning combination once they stop spinning. One repeats the previous steps, hoping to get a large jackpot. The amount of money won tends to vary widely. A machine is likely to yield money if you get any set of matching pictures. In other words, it doesn’t matter what the picture is of, as long as you get three of a kind. However, a matching set of one particular picture (exactly what that picture is depends on the machine) will give you a particularly large jackpot.

The major difference between video slots and their counterparts is that video slots use a “virtual” reel—images of spinning pictures—rather than pictures painted on real wheels that actually spin.

Bets

It must be remembered that video slots are just as much a matter of luck as their more low-tech mechanical counterparts. Not everybody who has encountered video slots understands this. When video slots first entered the market back in the 1970’s, they were not very popular because people were distrustful of the technology. After all, if the spinning numbers and pieces of fruit on the screen were the result of a program, maybe all the outcomes were programmed, too. The mechanical slot machines seemed more honest and authentic by comparison, or more dependent on the laws of chance.

Video Slot

The above opinion reflects not only a misunderstanding of video slots, but, deeper still, a misunderstanding of what all slot machines are like. Mechanical slots are also programmed so that the casino will still make a profit from the machine over the long term, even if some players hit the jackpot every now and then. The incidence of winning combinations in both mechanical and video slots must occur at a certain proportion of the time, but not at a predictable number of instances apart. Such a formula, partly patterned and partly random, is exactly what keeps players pulling the levers again and again. Once a player gets past his or her misconceptions about video slots, he or she will be free to get maximum enjoyment out of the game. Actually, video slots might sometimes be more user-friendly than old-fashioned slot machines. The wheels on mechanical slots are subject to wear and tear. Over time, it is quite likely that one or more wheels will not be spinning as it should, thus yielding unfair and skewed results. This does not happen to virtual wheels. On the other hand, the program governing the virtual wheels must be guarded against bugs and hackers in order to prevent a (small-scale, more realistic) version of the Ocean’s Thirteen scenario.

Strategies

Much of the skill involved in working a lot machine is in knowing when to stop. This is harder than it sounds. As behavioral psychologists would know well, slot machines are structured to keep players pulling the lever as many times as possible. Unpredictable rewards have the same results on humans as they did on Skinner’s lab rats: the behavior that brings on the reward is repeated more frequently than if the subject is able to count on receiving the reward. The presence of other gamblers in the casino also spurs us to keep pulling that lever or pushing that button. We worry that we will give up just before the machine is due for another jackpot, and that the person who sits down after us might win a fortune after a few pulls. Given the unpredictable nature of slot machine winnings, this fear does have some justification. We are always tempted to keep going just a little bit longer, to make sure we do not give up too soon.

Video Slots

Perhaps the best precaution is to spend a pre-set amount of money, and not to exceed that amount no matter what—even if you win a jackpot. It is all too easy to become over-excited and pour one’s winnings right back into the casino’s pockets. If the siren call of the slots is too hard to resist, a player might try removing all (or almost all) money in excess of the pre-set amount from his or her person before approaching the machine.

The Experience

In essence, both old-fashioned slot machines and the video versions are very similar. If we wish to compare them, we must focus on the “frills” because they are where the differences lie.

On the one hand, mechanical slots do have a sort of quaint, nostalgic charm. However, the virtual format does allow for some very fun and witty displays and sound effects that would simply be impossible on a set of mechanical slot machine wheels. Video slot machines also tend to offer more complex and interesting pictures, besides the traditional fruits, numbers and letters. One recent development on the gambling scene has been the introduction of the themed slot machine, whose screen images might be composed of, say, cartoons of celebrity faces. We can see that video slot machines have certain advantages over the older machines. Also, devotees of old-fashioned slot machines may find it increasingly difficult to stick to their preferences because more and more casinos are switching to the video version. This makes a great deal of sense, since it might be easier for a casino to keep an eye on all its slot machines via a central computer.

As more and more mechanical slot machines are being replaced by video versions, the term “video slots” may not have much special meaning any longer. However, as long as there are still old-fashioned mechanical slot machines on the market, strong positive or negative opinions of video slot machines will exist. Of course, everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. Even so, the issue would be much improved if all these opinions were based on a correct understanding of slot machines with virtual wheels, instead of misconceptions about their unfairness.
