Michigan Online Casinos With Blackjack:

How To Play Online Blackjack

How To Play Blackjack – The Basics

At the start of each hand of blackjack (after initial bets are made), the dealer deals two cards to each player, as well as two to themselves–one face up and one face down. The card that can be seen by all players is known as the “dealer’s card” (or “up card”), and the card facing down is the hole card.

Some people refer to the dealer’s card as the card that is “showing” and the hole card as “underneath.”

Each player around the table gets a chance to make decisions based upon the two cards they have in their hand, relative to what the dealer is showing. The blackjack strategy card gives the players the best mathematical advice on what to do in every situation.

Players who use the Blackjack Strategy Chart are helping themselves to keep the house edge on blackjack as close to 0.5% as possible.

Players may “stand”, or refuse to be dealt any more cards. They may “hit”–ask the dealer to deal them an additional card. Players may also “double down” (depending on the specific rules of the blackjack table) in order to double their initial bet in return for one and only one more card from the dealer.

Players with two similar cards in their hand also have the option to “split” those cards and play two hands (being required to match their initial bet) in order to have two chances to get as close to 21 as possible.

After every player has had their turn, the dealer has rules that must be followed to draw a hand. In most cases, the dealer must “hit” on every hand up to 16 and “stand” on every hand 17 and over.

Players whose hands are closer to 21 than the dealer win. Players who have the same points as the dealer “push” (or tie) and those players who have gone over 21 or have fewer points than the dealer lose.

Lucky players who are dealt a ten and an ace win with a “blackjack”, and depending on the rules of the table, get paid better than even money.

MotorCity Casino Hotel

Another of Michigan’s three Detroit-based commercial casinos. MotorCity Casino Hotel offers classic blackjack, as well as no less than five other variations of the game.

How To Play Sweepstakes Blackjack Online In Michigan

Sweepstakes casino platforms offer the opportunity to play your favorite casino games and win cash prizes. Games at sweepstakes casinos don’t use cash as currency, and therefore don’t fall under the definition of real-money gambling.

Sweepstakes sites do offer the opportunity to win cash prizes, however. The casino games on these sites function as mini-sweepstakes games, and use “Sweeps Coins”, or sweepstakes credits, as currency. Sweeps Coins can then be redeemed for cash prizes.

Chumba Casino operates as the biggest US-facing sweepstakes casino site. The Chumba Casino platform offers both play money and sweepstakes versions of many casino games, including blackjack.

The play money side of Chumba Casino offers blackjack played with “Gold Coins” as currency. Gold Coins are strictly for use in Chumba Casino’s play money games and can be purchased at any time.

With Gold Coins purchases, players also receive an amount of Sweeps Coins as a gift. Sweeps Coins can be used in the sweepstakes games at Chumba Casino and redeemed for cash prizes.

The Sweeps Coins blackjack game at Chumba Casino plays almost identically to what you might find on the floor of a retail casino. Chumba Casino blackjack uses the classic 3-to-2 payout format, with the dealer standing on all 17s.

How To Play Blackjack Online For Free

Free Blackjack Sites

Michigan players can enjoy several different ways to play blackjack for free, honing their skills before trying out the real-money version of the game.

Free blackjack sites can be found with a quick Google search. Some real-money online casinos also offer the opportunity to play some games for free, using play money credits.

Golden Nugget NJ, for example, offers a “Demo Play” option for several of its blackjack titles.

Playing With Friends

Another way to get a feel for the game is to get a deck of cards and deal a few blackjack hands with friends. This method allows you to learn the game in a comfortable environment, learning the rules and strategy before hitting the real-money tables.

Types Of Blackjack Online

American Blackjack

American Blackjack stands as the most popular way to play the game in US-based legal online casinos. All game selections titled as simply “Blackjack” at an online casino play with American Blackjack rules.

The player and the dealer each start with two cards, and the player must try to get as close to 21 as possible without going over. If the player’s hand beats the dealer’s hand without going over 21, the player wins.

Most American Blackjack games payout at 3-to-2 odds when the player hits a blackjack.

Live Dealer Blackjack

Live Dealer Blackjack, aka Live Blackjack, gives players the experience of in-person play, combined with the convenience of playing online.

Human dealers oversee the game from a real-life table, located in a secure studio. The action is streamed live to the player, as the dealer deals the game as they would on the floor of a land-based casino.

Live dealer games arrived at Michigan’s legal online casinos on July 22, 2021. Learn more about live dealer casino games in Michigan.

Unlimited Blackjack

Unlimited Blackjack allows an unlimited number of players in the game at the same time. The dealer deals just one single hand, and all participating players can choose to play the hand as they wish.

Unlimited Blackjack tables offer open seats at all times, and you’ll never have to wait to get in the game.

European Blackjack

European Blackjack plays much like American Blackjack, but the dealer only gets one card, face-up, to begin the game. In American Blackjack, the dealer gets two cards to start and automatically turns over their hand if dealt a blackjack, ending the hand and taking the player’s bet for the house.

In European Blackjack, the player completes all actions before the dealer gets a second card. This means the player can end up losing more money in a single hand, as a double down or split increases the player’s bet.

Like American Blackjack, if the dealer ends up making 21 with their initial two cards, the hand is over and the house wins.

Blackjack Rules In Michigan

  • The player and dealer are both dealt two cards. The player’s cards are both face-up, and the dealer has one face-up and one down card.
  • If the dealer’s face-up card is an ace or ten, the dealer checks the down card. If it makes a blackjack, the dealer turns over the hand and the house automatically wins.
  • If the dealer’s face-up card is an ace, the player is offered an Insurance bet. An Insurance bet amounts to half the total of the player’s original bet and pays out if the dealer has a blackjack.
  • If the dealer doesn’t have blackjack, the player has the option to hit (taking another card), stand (keep the hand as is), double down (double the amount of the bet), or surrender (end the hand without the dealer playing their hand, and lose only half the original bet).
  • If the player is dealt two of the same card, they can split, separating the paired hand into two separate hands, doubling the bet, and splitting the bet between the two hands. If Aces are split, each ace only gets one more card. Re-splitting a hand isn’t permitted.
  • The player continues until they either stand, or their card total goes over 21. Going over 21 results in a bust, resulting in a house win.
  • If the player stands, the dealer turns over their down card and starts taking more cards.
  • The dealer must hit on 16, and stand on 17. The dealer must hit on soft 17 (17 with one card as an ace).
  • If the dealer reaches a total between 17 and 21, and that total is more than the player’s total, the house wins. If the player’s total is higher, the player wins. A tie results in a push, returning the player’s bet.
  • If a player is dealt 21 with the first two cards, the hand is a blackjack, and the player is paid out at 3-to-2 odds on the original bet.
  • Aces count as either 1 or 11, and jacks, queens, and kings count as ten. Any hand with an ace can use the ace as either 1 or 11.

Blackjack Bonuses In Michigan

Deposit Match Bonuses

Many online casinos welcome new players with deposit match bonuses. This kind of bonus matches your initial deposit at an online casino with bonus money equaling a percentage of that deposit.

At Golden Nugget MI, for example, first-time depositors can enjoy a 100% deposit match bonus, up to $1,000. Collecting the bonus requires a 20x playthrough, meaning for every $20 wagered, $1 in bonus money is unlocked.

The playthrough requirement can only be fulfilled by playing certain games at Golden Nugget MI, so be sure to check the bonus terms and conditions to find out which games are eligible.

Risk-Free Day

Risk-Free Day offers allow new players to try out the games at an online casino and get a rebate on losses incurred during the first 24 hours of play.

At FanDuel Casino Michigan, for instance, new players can enjoy a risk-free day up to $1,000 after making their first deposit. The rebate only applies to losses up to $1,000, and the 24-hour period begins when you make your first wager at the casino.

Playing Legal Blackjack Online In Michigan

With Michigan’s state-regulated casinos debuting in January 2021, players in the Wolverine State enjoy access to several different brands. All of these mobile casino platforms offer secure and legal games, including blackjack, to players 21 and over located in Michigan.

The Michigan Lawful Internet Gaming Act mandates that all online casinos must operate in partnership with the state’s retail casinos. Michigan offers a multitude of online gambling options.

Online casinos function as extensions of Michigan’s retail casinos and therefore fall under the same regulations. The Michigan Gaming Control Board oversees the state’s three Detroit-based commercial casinos, while the National Indian Gaming Commission regulates Michigan’s 23 tribal casinos.

The gaming agencies in charge of overseeing Michigan’s casinos also regulateS the state’s online casinos. These regulatory bodies, as well as the casinos themselves, make the protection of customer funds and personal information a top priority.

Risks Of Playing At Offshore Sites

Offshore and illegal online gambling sites don’t operate under the regulation of any official tribal or state-level gaming regulation agency. Players depositing money at an offshore gambling site do so at their own risk.

Illegal gambling platforms have no obligation to protect your funds or personal information. Putting your money down at one of these sites brings the possibility of not getting that money back.

How To Play Blackjack At The Best Online Casinos In Michigan

Finding An Online Casino That Offers Blackjack

Blackjack stands as one of the most popular games at casinos around the world. Each online casino brand in Michigan will eventually offer plenty of opportunities to play blackjack.

Online casino brands operating in Michigan include Golden Nugget, FanDuel Casino, BetRivers, and BetMGM. All of these brands offer multiple different blackjack variants in other states, and Michigan players can expect the same.

Online Casino Mobile Apps And Browser-Based Clients

Most legal online casinos in other states offer their platforms as app downloads for mobile devices. Many of these brands include both an Android and an iOS version of their mobile apps.

Mobile casino apps for Android must be downloaded directly from the website of an online gambling site, as the Google Play store doesn’t allow downloads of real-money gambling apps. For iOS users, online casino apps can be found in the App Store.

The majority of legal online casinos also offer a web-based version of their platform, available through virtually any desktop browser.

Michigan’s online casinos can be accessed from anywhere within state borders. Geolocation technology allows an online casino to determine a user’s location when accessing the site.

Depositing Money To Play Blackjack

Michigan’s state-regulated online casinos accept several different deposit methods. ACH/eCheck, credit/debit cards, PayPal, eWallets, prepaid cards, and wire transfer represent some of the different ways to get money into an online casino account.

In-person cash deposits will present another way to fund an account. This method requires a visit to the casino cage of the retail property licensing an online casino.

Choosing A Blackjack Game

The online casinos operating in Michigan will load up the game menu with several different variants of blackjack in the coming months. The most common offering is American Blackjack, with 3-to-2 payouts for making a blackjack and the familiar rules of the most-played variant of blackjack in the US.

Some casinos alter the rules and payouts of American Blackjack. These rules variations can change the blackjack payout odds to 6-to-5, for example.

Perfect Blackjack (aka Perfect Pairs), Unlimited Blackjack, Spanish 21, and Multi-Hand Blackjack all play with variations on standard American Blackjack rules. Clicking on the “Info” or “?” tab during an online blackjack game brings up an overview of the rules of that variant.
