The Little River Casino Resort first opened in 1999. The Little River Band of Ottawa Indians opened the casino after they reached a compact with Michigan the year before. This casino first opened with 600 slots and video poker machines and eventually expanded to over 1,300 machines for players.

Over the years, the Manistee casino has undergone multiple renovations, each time increasing the size of the facility and the amenities offered to guests. In 2002, the current casino building and a hotel were constructed next to the previous casino. The old casino is still used for administrative purposes.

In 2007, the Little River Casino Resort underwent another expansion. The expansion added the Makwa Endaat event center with over 1,700 seats. Well-known musicians, including Chubby Checker and Martina McBride, and other acts perform for guests at the event center. The 2007 renovation also included additions to restaurants and the hotel, and the building of a winter garden featuring a stepped waterfall and wooden bridge. In fact, guests will notice a lot of water features inside and outside the Little River Casino Resort.

The 2016 renovation gave the Little River Casino Resort its most expansive update with a new indoor pool, the Nectar Spa & Salon, and a bar on the main floor. The renovation reconfigured the casino floor for greater access, the main floor increased in size, and VIP services and facilities expanded.

Presently, there are 292 hotel rooms available for casino guests and a 95-space RV park for campers. When not on a casino floor, guests can make use of the indoor and outdoor pools and sauna, visit the spa and salon, see shows in the event center, grab a drink at the bar, or sit down for a bite to eat in one of the three restaurants onsite.
