  CRB Dictionary - Roulette Wheel:

The Roulette Wheel is a major component of one of the most popular casino games of chance. Basically, a roulette wheel is like a spinning bowl divided into rings of square-shaped sections called pockets. Each pocket has a number, and is colored red or black. The game involves a casino staff member spinning the wheel, and then dropping a small ball onto it. The players are supposed to make wagers on the final resting place of the ball.

Interestingly, a rigged wheel might be better news for a player than an “honest” Roulette Wheel. If a wheel is rigged, then it does not move in a random manner. There is some kind of guiding principle behind the skewed results. Once you detect a rigged wheel and understand this guiding principle, you will be able to counter it. This works for both “live” wheels and virtual wheels in Roulette gambling software. An unrigged wheel, on the other hand, is random and unpredictable.

Often, the Roulette Wheel pockets are arranged in a ring, with the numbers displayed as external labels in a series of red and black squares in a ring immediately outside the pockets. The coloration of squares on a roulette wheel is quite interesting. One might expect that all the even numbers would be red, and all the odd numbers black, or vice versa. This is not the case. Rather, the odd numbers are red and the even numbers are black in the 1 to 10 and 19 to 28 squares. This color scheme is reversed for squares 11 to 18 and 29 to 36.

Roullete Wheel

There are several types of Roulette Wheel, briefly discussed below.

American Roulette Wheel

Despite its name, this type of wheel is thought to have been a product of France, not America. It is only so named because one is more likely to find it in American casinos. The distinguishing feature of the American Roulette Wheel is the numbers. In addition to the numbers 1 to 36, there is a zero (0) pocket, as well as a double zero (00) pocket, making for a total of 38 pockets. This type of Roulette Wheel is older than what is now called the French or European Wheel.

European Roulette Wheel

The European or French Roulette Wheel offers somewhat better odds than the American one because it has only one 0 pocket. The 00 pocket is absent. American customers are advised to seek online casinos that have European-style Roulette wheels, because this can be much more convenient than checking different brick and mortar casinos to see what kind of roulette wheel they use.

Mini Roulette Wheel

This roulette wheel is not simply a smaller version of the American or European Roulette Wheel. Rather, it contains fewer numbers, only having pockets from 0 to 12. This means that the betting options on this wheel are rather different from the ones based on the larger wheels. This is a relatively recent development, and is more likely to be found in online casinos than at “brick and mortar” gambling places. Interestingly, many of the online versions have progressive jackpot options. In many ways, the odds on this type of wheel are better, because of the smaller number of slots.
