MGCB Executive Director Richard S. Kalm Stepping Down

Richard S. Kalm, Executive Director of the Michigan Gaming Control Board, announced today that he will leave his position. Kalm will depart the Board after Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer chooses his successor and the state senate confirms the new appointment.

“I’ve had a great run and accomplished my final goal with the successful launch of online gaming and sports betting,” Kalm said. “My career has been devoted to public service, and I have enjoyed serving the people of Michigan since 2007 as MGCB executive director. Our agency’s mission has grown since my initial appointment, and I am proud of the MGCB’s accomplishments during my tenure.”

Kalm’s tenure at the MGCB began in 2007, when Michigan was only a fledgling commercial gambling market. During the years that followed, he brought pari-mutuel horse race wagering and charitable poker under the MGCB umbrella.

Online Gambling In Michigan

Perhaps most notable (and most recent) among Kalm’s accomplishments was ushering in a new era for Michigan bettors. Kalm, alognisde his MGCB colleagues, state legislators, and regulators, oversaw the regulation of online sports betting, online casino gaming, online poker, and daily fantasy sports in Michigan.

All three forms of online gambling became officially legal in 2019, and regulators authorized launch on January 22.

Since then, Michigan has skyrocketed to become one of the leading US markets for online sports betting and online casinos.

Put simply, Kalm leave behind an impressive legacy, but he also leaves Michigan gambling in a prosperous position.

“I appreciate the opportunity Governor Whitmer gave me to stay on and oversee the launch of online gaming,” Kalm said. “It has been my pleasure to work with everyone involved in online gambling and sports betting in Michigan, including the commercial and tribal casinos, the gaming suppliers, the Governor’s Office, other state departments and the Legislature.”

Thank You From The MichiganSharp Team

Kalm and his team at the MGCB have always made the extra effort to keep MichiganSharp updated on the latest developments in the Great Lakes State. We thank Kalm for his service, and look forward to working with his successor, when appointed, in addition to continuing our relationship with the larger MGCB team.”
