Michigan Sports Betting Sets Revenue Record in October

Thanks to five football weekends, sports betting in Michigan set a record in October with a betting handle of $463.3 million according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board. Paired with the more than $34 million in sports bets taken in by Detroit casinos in October, close to half a billion ($497.6 million) was wagered in the state, a record for Michigan.

The heated rivalry game between Michigan and Michigan State, played on Oct. 30, fueled a lot of wagering, making it one of the five most bet events of the 2021 sports season so far.

Top Michigan Sportsbooks in Betting Handle for October 2021

  1. FanDuel ranked first in online sports betting handle in Michigan with $124 million and a 26.8% market share.
  2. DraftKings took in $120.4 million in online sports bets for a 26% market share.
  3. BetMGM came in third in Michigan with $102.2 million and a 22.1% share.

Tax Revenue Paid to the State

Per the MGCB, $552.907 in tax money was generated by online sportsbooks in October in Michigan, and $354,113 in taxes was paid to the city of Detroit. Since March, sports betting operators paid nearly $5 million to the state in taxes.

Since sports betting launched in Michigan in March of 2020, and online wagering started in January 2021, the state has seen growth in revenue:

Michigan continues to prove to be a popular sports betting market, despite coming on board later than other states. The U.S. record for revenue is held by New Jersey, which reported $1.3 billion in October.
