History Of Turtle Creek Casino And Hotel

The Turtle Creek Casino first opened in 1996, as the second casino owned by the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. The first being the Leelanau Sands Casino opened in 1984 in defiance of Michigan’s restriction against casino gaming. Turtle Creek Casino came about two years after the Grand Traverse Band reached a compact with Michigan finally granting them the legal right to operate casinos on reservation land.

The original casino had no hotel, so visitors were limited to day trips or had to stay at nearby accommodations, such as the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa also owned by the Grand Traverse Band.

Outdoor lights shine on the building in an ever-changing multi-color night-time display, while a water feature creates a park-like feeling that invites guests to linger before heading into the building.

Inside, the casino offers a massive gaming area with multi-story lounges overlooking the floor.
