Turtle Creek Casino came about two years after the Grand Traverse Band reached a compact with Michigan finally granting them the legal right to operate casinos on reservation land.
The original casino had no hotel, so visitors were limited to day trips or had to stay at nearby accommodations, such as the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa also owned by the Grand Traverse Band.
In 2008, the tribe invested in a new casino and resort on the same land. The lavish $116 million project was carried out while the original Turtle Creek casino remained open. A very modern building, the new casino features a silver metal exterior that rises slowly out of the ground in front of the six-story hotel. Outdoor lights shine on the building in an ever-changing multi-color night-time display, while a water feature creates a park-like feeling that invites guests to linger before heading into the building.
Inside, the casino offers a massive gaming area with multi-story lounges overlooking the floor. There is also a non-smoking poker room and lounge, as well as, conference areas, 137-room hotel, three bars, and dining.
