Detroit’s three casinos reported $114.1 million in monthly aggregate revenue for October 2021. Of that total, which is a 4.2% increase over September, table games and slots allotted for $111.5 million of the revenue, and retail sports betting accounted for $2.6 million.
Once again, MGM Grand Detroit topped the three casinos in the city, pulling 47% of the market share. MotorCity Casino was second with 33%, and Greektown Casino recorded 20% according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
Table Games and Slots Generate $9 Million in Tax Revenue
The cumulative gaming taxes paid by the three Detroit casinos to the State of Michigan for October totaled $9 million, according to Michigan.gov data. During the same month in 2020, the state received $7.6 million in gaming tax revenue, for an increase of nearly 16 percent.
Overall revenue for games and slots at MGM Grand, MotorCity, and Greektown in October was 18.9% higher than it was in October 2020 when there were still restrictions due to COVID-19. Buoyed by fewer restrictions from the pandemic in 2021, year-to-date table games and slots revenue has risen 91.1% through October compared to 2020. Casinos were closed from mid-March of ’20 until early due to COVID-19 concerns.
The City of Detroit received $13.8 million in wagering taxes and development agreement payments from the Detroit casinos in October.

Year-To-Year Gaming Revenue By Casino
Monthly gaming revenue when compared with October 2020 increased at each Detroit-based casino:
- MGM: 39.4% to $52.7 million
- MotorCity: 1.8% to $36.9 million
- Greektown: 10.8% to $21.9 million
Retail Sports Betting
Detroit’s casinos gathered in $34.2 million in sports wagers in October, marking the highest total for any full month since Michigan online sports betting went live. It was bolstered by five weekends of NFL and college football in the month, including the Michigan/Michigan State rivalry game, which was one of the most wagered games in the country this year.
Casinos are competing with online sportsbooks this October, which cut into their sports betting qualified adjusted gross receipts (QAGR). Compared to October 2020, QAGR was down a whopping 65.2% in October 2021, but last year Michiganders had to go to the retail locations to bet their NFL and NCAA football. That number is down 23.6% compared to September 2021.

Fantasy Contests in Michigan for September 2021
Fantasy contest operators reported total adjusted revenues of $1,571,786 and paid taxes of $132,030 for September of 2021 (data is always a month lagging for fantasy contests from the MGCB).
Fantasy Contest and Fantasy Sports remain popular for many fans, as year-to-date (through the end of September), fantasy contest operators have reported an aggregate fantasy contest adjusted revenues of $11.9 million, paying roughly $1 million to the State of Michigan.
