Detroit Casinos Report Increase In Revenue For July

The numbers are in, and they show an increase in monthly aggregate revenue for the trio of Detroit casinos in July. The MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Greektown Casino report a combined $116.9 million in monthly aggregate revenue for July 2021, an increase of 9.3% from June.

According to figures released by the Michigan Gaming Control Board, table games and slots at the Detroit casinos generated $115.7 million in revenue while retail sports betting at the venues generated $1.2 million.

The figures are lower than the aggregate monthly revenue from July 2019 ($119 million), the last July that the three casinos were open. All three Detroit casinos were closed last July due to COVID-19 restrictions.

In June, the three casinos reported $108.1 million in monthly aggregate revenue.

Breakdown of Revenue and Taxes Paid by Detroit Casinos

During July 2021, here are the revenue figures for each of the Detroit casinos:

  • MGM Grand Detroit recorded $53.8 million
  • MotorCity Casino recorded $38.5 million
  • Greektown Casino recorded $23.4 million

The July 2021 market shares were:

  • MGM Grand Detroit: 46%
  • MotorCity Casino: 34%
  • Greektown Casino: 20%

The MGCB reports that the three Detroit casinos paid a total of $9.4 million in gaming taxes to the State of Michigan during July. According to the Detroit casinos, $13.8 million in wagering taxes and development agreement payments were made to the City of Detroit for activities in July of 2021.

Retail Sports Betting Revenue and Taxes

The casinos reported total gross sports betting receipts of $1,211,857, and total handle was $18,272,783.

Retail sports betting qualified adjusted gross receipts for July 31 were reported as $1,211,832.

Totals by casino for retail sports betting were:

  • MotorCity Casino: $637,681
  • Greektown Casino: $437,203
  • MGM Grand Detroit: $136,948

Per MGCB, the Detroit casinos paid $45,807 in state taxes on retail sports betting during July, and submitted $55,987 in retail sports betting taxes to the City of Detroit.

Fantasy Contests In Michigan

In June 2021, fantasy contest operators in Michigan reported total adjusted revenues of $1,312,438, which resulted in $110,245 in taxes to the state.

Aggregate fantasy contest adjusted revenues for June (the most recent month with complete data) were $8.3 million. Thus far in 2021, fantasy contest operators have paid $697,183 in taxes to the state of Michigan year-to-date through June 30.
