Michigan Casino Revenue Report, January 2021

The monthly revenue for Michigan’s three Detroit casinos rose by nearly 300 percent in January compared to December, according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

The three Detroit casinos took in $90.84 million even though they were operating with limited capacity due to restrictions from Covid-19. Here’s the market breakdown by casino:

Compared to the same month last year (January 2020), revenue from table games and slots was down 27% in January 2021. MGM saw a 32% year-over-year decrease ($34 million in revenue in Jan 2021), MotorCity reported a 20% decrease ($33.2 million) and Greektown pulled in $19.6 million, which was a 30% decrease from the same month in 2020.

All three Detroit casinos are operating under a state order to limit capacity and observe social distancing. They reopened just before Christmas on December 23, 2020. The Michigan Gaming Control Board had ordered them closed on November 18, 2020, as part of a state-wide effort to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

The decrease in gambling revenue at the three casinos in Detroit lowered the gaming tax amount to $7 million, as opposed to the $9.7 million they paid for January 2020 activity. The City of Detroit received $10.3 million, according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
