Michigan Casino, Sports Betting Revenue Climb for September

For the second consecutive month, Michigan casino and sports betting revenue have increased, according to figures recently released by the Michigan Gaming Control Board. It’s a much-needed rebound following the 100-day state-mandated casino closures this spring, and signs of life in a market battered by the pandemic.

Michigan Sports Betting September Revenue

For the month of September, Michigan’s total sports betting handle was just over $33.5 million, a 113% increase over’s take. That translates to nearly $4.4 million in revenue for the state.

As for how individual casinos fared, MGM Grand Detroit, with its self-branded BetMGM Sports Lounge, edged out MotorCity Casino for the top spot, taking in over $14.6 million in handle for September. MotorCity for its part, took in just under $13 million in September handle through its FanDuel Sportsbook partnership. Last but not least is Greektown Casino, home of the recently opened Barstool Sportsbook, which collected $5.8 million in sports wagers last month.

Michigan Casino September Revenue

September was a solid month for Detroit’s three land casinos as well. Despite still operating at a capacity capped at 15%, casinos in Detroit took in just under $88 million in revenue for September, a 27.5% increase over last month. MGM Grand Detroit again came out on top with $36.1 million in revenue. Right on its heels is MotorCity, which took in $32.2 million. Greektown’s September revenue was just under $19.6 million.

The numbers are promising, but overall gambling revenue in Michigan is down sharply from last year, by more than 55%.
