The Michigan Gaming Control Board officially has a new leader, as Henry Williams has been confirmed by the state senate today.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who has overseen the rapid growth of sports betting in Michigan, appointed Williams’ as executive director on April 23. His six-year term commences today following his confirmation.
Williams has more than two decades of experience working for the MGCB, and he was formerly deputy director for the agency’s Casino Operations division. In that post, he handled the issuance of occupational gaming licenses, managed Michigan’s Gaming Lab, and oversaw self-exclusion programs for problem gamblers. He is a Detroit resident who attended Marygrove College and earned a social work license in the state.
“Mr. Williams is the consummate professional,” said Motor City Casino President Bruce Dall. “[Henry] treats everyone with respect and courtesy regardless of position, both at the casinos and with his colleagues at the MGCB. We know Mr. Williams to be fair, respectful, and honest, with his primary mission being preserving and protecting the integrity of gaming in Michigan.”
About The Michigan Gaming Control Board
The Michigan Gaming Control Board was formed in 1997, when the state passed laws authorizing three casinos in the Detroit area. The MGCB operates under the Michigan Department of Treasury, and its executive director serves a six-year term, appointed by the governor.
The MGCB is charged with overseeing the interests of the people of the state of Michigan in regards to gaming and the operation of licensed gaming in the jurisdiction. Detroit commercial casinos must apply for gaming operations licensing through the MGCB, which safeguards the industry from corruption or mismanagement. The executive director works in conjunction with a five-member board.
