  Around The World:

Around the World is a combination drinking and card game. It does not bear much resemblance to poker or blackjack, and mainly involves guessing the characteristics of the facedown card you have been dealt.

We probably ought to start with a safety warning. Of course, people who cannot hold their liquor well, have a history of alcoholism, or have allergies or other adverse reactions connected to alcohol, are all advised to avoid this game. Still, they can get a piece of the action, however vicariously. The drunken antics of their companions may, up to a point, provide many opportunities for amusement and/or blackmail.

In the first round, players are dealt four or five cards, and asked to guess the right answer to a question about each card. If their guess is right, they can point to another player and force him or her to take a drink. This is called “giving” a drink. Of course, the player must take a drink if he or she guesses wrong. The first question is whether the card is red or black. The question for the second card is whether its value exceeds or is exceeded by that of the previous card. Players have the choice of guessing that the second card has a greater value, a lesser one, or the same one. Question three concerns whether that card has a value in between that of the previous two cards. Players may guess that the value is in between, not in between, or is an exact match for one of the previous two cards. For the fourth card, the player usually has to guess the suit. In some games, the first round also contains a fifth card. The player must guess if the card value is a picture card, or if not a picture card, whether its value is odd or even. At the end of the first round in such games, players will have five cards, and will then have to assess them according to poker rankings. The player with the best hand gets special privileges for the second round, being able to overrule the results of guesses.

Around the World

For this round, all drink sizes are more or less the same. It is only in the second round that drink quantities are assigned to different bets or different parts of the game. Therefore, you would do well to stick to the safer bets, since there is no real reward (besides bragging rights) for doing well on a risky bet as opposed to a safe one. In concrete terms, it makes a lot of sense to avoid betting on the “same value” option, unless you are actually trying to get drunk early by deliberately setting yourself up to fail.

In the second round, players focus on a group of shared cards, instead of cards dealt to them individually. However, they must keep the cards they received in the first round, as those are still important. In the second round, the dealer (who is probably also a player) will pull out two groups of cards, each containing four cards, which are to each be turned over. One group is called the “give” group, and the other is, of course the “take” group. Players are allowed to force others to drink if they have cards matching the values of any in the “give” group, and must take drinks themselves if one of their cards matches a card in the “take” group.

As you may have noticed from the above description of the rules, Around the World offers many reasons—or opportunities—to drink. You tend to down much more alcohol in Around the World than you might in other drinking games. This is because game-play in around the world is quite rapid, while at the same time tending to go on for many rounds.

Now that we are familiar with the rules, we may discuss strategy. You will have an easier time implementing your strategies in the early parts of the game, since the second round is much more about luck. The first type of strategy you can use is card-counting from blackjack. This will help you to estimate the odds that you have a black card, an odd card, etc. A little poker strategy might be helpful, too. Remember, poker has a small but pivotal role in this game. If you come up with the best poker hand, you get very important perks in the second round. Unfortunately, it is often very difficult to combine blackjack and poker strategies in the same game, since they are two different game families. You might have to choose to focus on one, and forget about the other.

Then again, players might be more worried about trying to hold their alcohol than about implementing the finer points of card-counting strategy. Also, card-based strategy will only take you so far. Even if you guess correctly much of the time, you may still end up getting very drunk if other players keep making you drink. In fact, appearing to be very good with the cards will probably attract their attention to the point that they will keep choosing to give you drinks in order to better their own chances.

Speaking of drinks, the alcohol itself can be considered a part of game strategy. Around the World strategy depends very much on your goals. Are you trying to get the most threatening player drunk in order to improve your chances of winning? Or are you trying to get a certain somebody drunk for (ahem) personal reasons? Players who are out to win are more likely to assign drinks to several people whenever they can, in order to cover all the bases and eliminate threats. People with the later nefarious scheme—excuse me, I meant objective—in mind will probably keep selecting the same person again and again, unless they are trying to be subtle and hide their plans.

Then again, winning may not be a huge concern in the first place, since players are not in the game for money. This is precisely what makes Around the World so fun. For once, playing is just about having fun, instead of about being competitive. Of course, you should be careful not to drink too much, so as not to harm yourself and others. However, if you are among friends you trust, and have planned for a sober person to take you home, Around the World is a great way to spice up card-play.
