Kewadin Casino, Hotel And Convention Center History

The opening of the Kewadin Casino, Hotel, and Convention Center was approved by the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians Board of Directors in 1984. The casino would later open in November 1985, but at the time was a simple one-room blackjack house. It has been expanded at many points, including in 1988, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1997, and 2004.

In 1987, Kewadin Casinos opened its new casino in St. Ignace, while the hotels in Christmas, Hessel, and Manistique were opened in 1994. The popularity of Kewadin Casino, Hotel, and Convention Center was the reason for moving from one casino to several and the tribe gaining ownership of other non-gaming enterprises. By 2005, the businesses employed almost 2,000 people, making the tribe the largest employer in the Upper Peninsula.

An anonymous tip in Jun 2011 led to two arrests by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribal Police after individuals were seen using a device to manipulate the gaming machines to get a higher payout. The investigation that followed between the Tribal Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) found that six people have been working together and traveled to the casino on more than 50 weekends between June 2009 and June 2001 to steal more than $300,000 from the casino.

In October 2013, each of the six people plead guilty to a count of conspiracy to commit theft from a gaming establishment on Native American lands. Sentencing was handled by U.S. District Judge Robert Holmes Bell at the beginning of March 2014.

Kewadin Casino, Hotel, and Convention Center is now a space that offers an ample gaming space, a hotel with more than 300 rooms, and a 25,000 square feet convention center. Some of the unique amenities at this casino include the Bahweting Art Gallery, Rapids Lounge, Signatures Bar, and Miigwewnen Gift Shop.

Loyalty Program

As one of the Kewadin Casinos, Kewadin Casino, Hotel, and Convention Center offers a loyalty program called the Northern Rewards Club. Spending time at any of the casinos will earn comps and points that can be used in gift shops, hotels, restaurants, and delis.

The club has a two-point system where the two sets of points can be gained at the same time but serve separate purposes. A club point is gained for every $4 in slot play, every $8 bet in video poker, and each $1 bet in keno. At the same time, a tier point is also earned for each of these actions.

The different tiers reset on a six-month basis and include the following:

  • Valor Card – Available for all retired, active, and honorably discharged military, fire, EMS, and police
  • Green Card – 1 to 1,499 points
  • Silver Card – 1,500 to 7,499 points
  • Gold Card – 7,500 to 34,999 points
  • Black Card – 35,000 or more points

As guests of the casino gain points, they can move up in tiers and enjoy more significant discounts and better perks. As an example, Green Card members receive a 5% discount on dining, while Black Card members get a 20% discount.
