Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell’s personality is a welcomed sight in Allen Park. Campbell is the exact opposite to former head coach Matt Patricia, and we all know how that story ended.
Patricia didn’t even have a chance to unpack his belongings after landing in Detroit, yet he instructed personnel to remove any extracurricular activities from the teams’ facility. I mean, why can’t professional athletes unwind with a quick game of foosball now and then?

Winning and the Detroit Lions rarely belong in the same sentence, but with a new regime now in place, the needle is pointing in the right direction. It’s amazing what a competent general manager can do to a franchise. Unlike Bob Quinn, newly appoint Brad Holmes seems to be pushing all of the right buttons early on in his tenure with the franchise.
Sure, similar to Quinn, Holmes is bringing in a few familiar faces. He fearlessly pulled the trigger on a blockbuster deal that sent Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for two first-round picks, a third-round choice, and an NFL starting quarterback that is only in his mid-20s with a Super Bowl appearance.
Holmes also went to the discount rack and collected veteran defensive tackle Michael Brockers who will help change the culture on the defensive side of the football. In addition, Brockers is expected to help both rookie tackles selected early in the 2021 NFL Draft Alim McNeill and Levi Onwuzurike.
The National Media Continues To Pile On The Detroit Lions.
Recently, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell was announced as a Grand Marshall Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix for the NTT IndyCar Series. In Campbell’s first press conference after the announcement, he put on a full racing helmet and stated how honored he was to be chosen for the role. Campbell then used this to explain he’s driving in a new culture to Allen Park.
Colin Cowherd and his co-host Joy Taylor couldn’t help themselves on their Fox Sports 1 show titled The Herd. Since the inaugural Campbell ‘biting knee caps off’ speech, the pair use the Detroit Lions as a punching bag every chance they get. The pair also mocked Campbell’s friendly notion of adding a real-life lion to be the teams’ mascot. Campbell is clearly kidding, but remember, when it comes to the Detroit Lions, NFL stands for No Fun League.
Sure Campbell comes off as a rah-rah guy. Biting knee caps off was a bit much, but most of us understood the point Campbell was trying to drive home.
The organization is entering another wholesale rebuild whether management wants to use the term or not. Campbell wants his club to fight for every inch even if they lose far more games than win in his first season at the helm. Campbell doesn’t want his version of the Detroit Lions to be a pushover like the previous regime.
We need to refrain from judging Holmes and Campbell regardless of how the Detroit Lions fare. This regime needs two or three years under its belt before making a fair assessment of which direction the organization is headed. It’s June, let’s welcome Campbell’s playful antics and move on from the ‘why so serious’ Matt Patricia.
