Michigan Online Casino & Sports Betting Revenue Increases In July

Online casino and sports betting in Michigan had a successful month in July, reporting $92.3 million in gross receipts for the month, a more than 25 percent increase over June, when the state took in $66.2 million.

That increase is largely due to the adjustments made in June to the BetMGM revenue based on a free-to-play period. The $92.3 million in gross receipts is back in line with what Michigan reported in March, April, and May.

For July, online casinos took in $83.1 million, while online sports betting garnered $12.4 million in adjusted gross receipts for July.

Internet gaming operators in Michigan reported $92.3 million in gaming gross receipts for July. Internet sports betting operators reported $19.6 million in total gross sports betting receipts with a total handle of $188 million for the month.

Michigan Gaming Revenue To Date

Michigan remains one of the most successful states for online gambling and sports betting, with its 13 online and mobile operators and three Detroit retail operators bringing in more than half a billion in adjusted gross receipts thus far in 2021.

Since the launch of online gambling on January 22, 2021, through the end of July, aggregate internet gaming adjusted gross receipts now sits at $518.7 million. Aggregate internet sports betting adjusted gross sports betting receipts total $52.9 million for that period.

New Developments In Michigan Gaming And Sports Betting

The biggest development in Michigan recently was live dealer games going live in the state in early July. Initially, the following games were available for live dealer play:

Tax Revenue for Michigan From Internet Gaming

Operators delivered more than $17.8 million in taxes and payments to the State of Michigan, with a breakdown of  $17.1 million from internet gaming taxes and payments, and $762,220 from internet sports betting taxes and payments.

This tax total is roughly the same as was reported for March, which had a record handle for the state since launching in January.

Taxes and payments in Michigan are based on adjusted gross receipts, which for July of 2021 were $83.1 million for internet gaming and $12.4 million for internet sports betting. Per the Michigan Gaming Control Board, adjusted gross receipts include deductions for the monetary value of free play incentives provided to and wagered by bettors.

Detroit Casino Revenue Report

$4.8 million in taxes and fees were gathered in July from the three Detroit casinos. This includes $4.4 million for internet gaming taxes and fees, and $377,223 from internet sports betting taxes and fees.

During July, 13 operators were authorized for both forms of online wagering, and one operator was authorized for internet casino gaming only. Details for each operator’s internet gaming and internet sports betting results are available in tables published on the MGCB website.
